Drunk on A Bus. Vancouver, British Coulumbia. - January 13th, 2005
Second Vancouver Transit Driver Reports Drunk For Work.

//party

This story was ripped fresh of the presses in Vancouver, British Columbia this week.

Right of the bat The Seed Enterprise Collective would like to say that Drinking and Driving is not acceptable. In the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and even the 90’s well lubed up sports fans around North America wouldn’t have thought twice about having several pops and heading off to the game. Having said that, we would like to acknowledge that every person and we mean every person who consumes alcohol on a regular or not so regular basis is guilty of at one time or another operating a vehicle while slightly impaired. However, if you have gotten away with it thus far, please stop it. You are not only risking the embarrassment of losing your license, but you are risking your life plus the life of innocent people everywhere. Consider yourself forgiven for your last errors in judgment and from this point on, when in doubt take a cab.

Though this is not directly a sports story, I thought I would share it with you just because of its cultural significance and the fact that it is just damn funny.

That brings us to a story that does not seem to want to die. Bus Drivers and booze. I know it is not fair to paint each bus driver as a drunk. Quite the contrary the majority are likely very responsible individuals with safety being the #1 priority. The problem is two months, two drinking bus drivers, what gives? Right off of today’s front page: “Random booze tests urged for bus drivers.” The acting president of MADD, Bob says…..“…..” Bob must be one fine looking mother don’t you think. Anyway I digress. What a screaming endorsement for increased transit fares.

Having gotten the PSA out of the way I would like to share with you a drinking and driving scenario that I find to be absolutely hilarious. This pertains to the first incident of bad judgment by a transit worker. The story was also ripped out of the headlines in Vancouver, British Columbia. I would not share this with you if someone was hurt, fortunately nobody was, so here goes. In the first incident in the late fall of 2004 a local bus driver decided to report for his shift without allowing enough time to pass for the festivities of the night before to exit his body. This complete moron was so inebriated that he stunk of alcohol and his judgment was so altered that not only was he driving drunk, but he thought it would be ok to ignore the no-smoking laws of the city and enjoy a smoke while driving.

The reason I find this funny, is that people still got on the bus. You think the smoking would have put up a red flag or perhaps the fact that when you handed him the cash, he gave you a gin & tonic. A transfer token - A tall boy. It didn’t stop some people - I peed myself when I heard that. Not only did they get on the bus, but later they phoned 911 to share the story of the driver being drunk and allowed themselves to be interviewed about it. I’m thinking that if I was stupid enough to get on the bus in the first place, I wouldn’t want to use my 15 minutes of fame announcing that I did. The driver was
Smoking! I have one simple rule that I follow when it comes to public transit and getting to the game.

If the driver is smoking and he reeks of booze.
I take the next bus.

Cheers
