That is a statement that we are all too familiar with. Is it fair, are there any flaws in the system. No one wants their team to loose on a controversial call, which is a heartbreaker. Instant replay defiantly has done wonders in some games, but is there a flaw? Has anyone wondered what the referees are actually seeing? Sure it is replays shown to the head referee and the replay official, but what angles are they actually seeing. This is where the true flaw lies in instant replay.
Now everyone knows that I am a diehard San Francisco 49er fan, but it just so happened that they were the team playing when this flaw happened. Last week the 49ers played the San Diego Chargers in their last preseason game prior to the season opener. In the first quarter Tim Rattay threw a pass that missed a player and was intercepted by the chargers, or was it, the clear answer: no!
49er fans in the bay area saw 4 different replays, which were different from the one that the head referee had seen. On all 4 replays the ball clearly bounced off the turf. Coach Nolan threw in the red flag, but those so famous words; "After further review, the play stands as called!"
Why was this, it was clear to everyone, at least in the bay area. What the replay official and the head referee saw were replays show to them from the San Diego home cameras, which blocked the view of the ball bouncing off the field. That my friend is a flaw!
You are probably wondering why I am pointing this out, not because it was against the niners, but that it could happen and probably already has in some situations. This is a huge problem which could ultimately affect the outcome of playoff games, even the Super Bowl
Something needs to be done about this and fast, I doubt the league even knows about it!
