Although I am not enamored with the idea of determining the winner of a match on penalty kicks, I do understand the need for it. Keep in mind in soccer each team is only allowed 3 substitutions in the entire game. So after 2 hours of action each team would have 8 players that have been out there the entire time, no line changes, no time outs, no TV breaks. Given that to continue to play would probably not only only see neither team score again but could physically damage some especially when the temperatures are high.

So the dilemma is how to determine a winner. In the old days, the match would be drawn after 120 minutes and would then be replayed at a later date. That is not an option in today's world because of the already tightly packed schedule for these players. So the only option available is PKs, I may not think it's the best way but I can live with it and the tension of the PK with so much riding on it is tremendous. Plus I got to laugh at David Trezeguet when he hit the bar with his PK, given that I watched the game in a room full of French supporters made it all the better when I let out a big BWAHAHAHAHA when the dear David missed. So that was fun.
