I would sort of agree with you jay about the combine but not totally. Teams/Scouts take it all in, their college play, senior bowl, combine, team visits, etc to grade their players.

So even higher first round players should participate and do well at the combine to keep their status high. Its one of the last things that these teams have on the players before the draft. Knowing the strength and speed of the players can play a large part in deciding if this player can perform at the NFL level. He may be dominate in college but if he is slow and weak at the combine that could translate into different draft numbers, and why is he that way? Slackin off, not hitting the gym, etc.

I'd love to know (and may research it) how some players were ranked right after the college season and where they were ranked after the off season stuff they do, just to see what caused that type of change, better or worse.

One thing I love about the draft is that anything can happen. Eagles OL Winston Justice leading up till the draft was a mid first round pick but slipped to the second, I wonder the reasoning for each team. They should have to publicise their draft prospectus for players, for me to read, lol.
