St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa was arrested Thursday in Florida on suspicion of drunken driving.
Police said they found LaRussa asleep inside his running dark blue Ford sport utility vehicle at a stoplight. In a news release, Jupiter police said LaRussa's car sat partially in the intersection through two green-light cycles, forcing another driver to go around him.
The news release stated that LaRussa awakened after police knocked on the window several times. He was instructed to pull the SUV to the side of the road.
Police said LaRussa smelled of alcohol and failed standard roadside sobriety tests. Authorities said he gave two breath samples, which measured at 0.093 blood-alcohol concentration. The legal limit is 0.08.
Jail records show the 62-year-old was arrested around midnight and booked in the Palm Beach County jail on the misdemeanor charge about four hours later.
He was released at about 8:30 a.m. after posting $500 cash bond.
Police said LaRussa was cooperative. His lawyer declined to comment.
LaRussa declined to comment while he was outside the clubhouse in uniform hours later at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter, where he planned to manage a spring training game against the Florida Marlins.
The Cardinals said in a statement that the team takes "these matters very seriously" and apologized for any embarrassment and distractions. "The Cardinals organization remains supportive of Tony," the team said.
