A good question. He was in fact valuable to every team in the league because without him attendance for all Rangers games would have been less.

His stats were such that the voters just felt that he had to get the award.

The beauty of the MVP is the fact that are no established statistical criteria. if there were there would be no discussion about it and no one would care.

The best MVP debate I remember was 1978/Jim Rice-Ron Guidry. They both put up historical numbers for winning teams. The Yanks won the series and Guidry went 25-3 with a sub 2.00 ERA. Rice was an offensive monster. The argument was that pitcher shouldn't qualify as MVP. Rice won the MVP, Guidry and the Yanks won the playoff, pennant and world series.
