I clearly remember 3 rival leagues to the NFL.

The WFL in the 70s. They tried to sign top level talent and did in some cases like Larry Csonka and Jim Kiick. However, the financial backing was not there and the league folded and no one cared.

The USFL in the 80s. Went after top level guys coming out of college like Jim Kelly, Steve Young and Reggie White. Eventually they won an anti-trust lawsuit for somethin like $3.

The XFL run by the fella who runs the pro wrestling. From what I read this league actually made money but there was a bust up with NBC that led to its demise.
