Because Nebraska has always used the excuse that they must play lesser 1-A OOC programs because upper level 1-A programs "wouldn't play us." With this move, they just threw that excuse in a hole. They are admiting to their team, their fans and their recruits that they can't compete with even the lower level 1-A teams.
Because 1-AA games don't count towards being bowl eligible. Because backing out at the last minute is a poor, disrespecful thing to do, especially for a so-called elite program. Because losing to a 1-AA team can be extremely damaging to a 1-A program. I can't give you specific examples, but Kansas St. and Ole Miss both lost to 1-AA programs within the last two years. I can't imagine that would go over well with recruits.
