First off, Mike: you don't follow college recruiting. Yes, the actual signing day is not until Feb 2; yes, it is not "official" until he has signed. However, every school honors a verbal commitment. They may keep in touch with them and recruit, but not near as aggressive as they would before a verbal. It is an unwritten honor code that virtually all HC's adhere to.
Second, focal: very true. Everyone is sure that he will be rusty. However, he can join the school in Jan (early for '05 signees) and begin practice in the Spring with the current team. The other '05 signees cannot begin practicing until the fall. So, he has a head up. Also, as of now, he is slated to be the #2 behind the current QB, Drew Olson, for the first year. So, again, he has ample time to get his skill honed. He wasn't named the best in his class nationally for nothing. Steve Spurrier, the DAY HE WAS HIRED, called Ben Olson to get him to come to South Carolina. He also had offers from Miami, Michigan, Cal, ASU. So, plenty of people that know thought he was still pretty good.
