As far as I know, the mashmallows has been a tradition for a number of years now - mid 90's perhaps. Students would sneak them in under their clothes, hidden in pocket sor under shirts or in coats.

Last season, the security officials at Folsom Field seriously cracked down on people bringing marshmallows into the stadium, going so far as to set up a rather elaborate security checkpoint at the student entrance. Every student entering gets lightly patted down before they are admitted - arms, sides, legs, small of the back. If anyone is caught bringing marshmallows or alcohol into the stadium, they are subject to having their tickets revoked for the entire season.

I personally think that CU officials are passing up a fairly good business opportunity. If they sold packages of about 10 marshmallows apiece for a couple bucks inside the stadium, they could easily make a few hundred dollars off that every home game. If they allowed the students to throw marshmallows in the stadium - but only the ones that were sold inside the gates - things would be alright.

The marshmallow fights usually start up about two minutes before halftime. My first year at CU (two yearsd ago) hundreds of marshmallows would be flying at any given time, all across the 30 yards and half of the south endzone that make sup the student section. A few idiots throw them at the band when they march out for the halftime show and when they return to the sidelines, but those are few and far between.

In the 2003 season for one game Doritos was doing a promotion at the stadium in which they left a small bag of baked Doritos tortilla chips on every seat in the stadium. And some idiots threw them. I'd rather get hit with a marshmallow than a flying tortilla chip any day of the week. Those fuckers are sharp.
