I think there is genuine outrage at the steroid scandal, especially from baseball fathers who use the sport as some sort of virtuous life lesson for their kids when it's just a fucking sport.
That said, I think banging the drums to "clean up" the sport is just preposterous. No one had a problem with steroids when McGwire and Sosa were saving the sport from its own self-made abyss. And if you didn't think there were steroids in baseball then, you obviously had never seen Jose Canceso or noticed that light-hitting shortstops were now averaging 25 home runs a season...and then leaving the league shortly thereafter.
