Well, McCain is an old man and it has been my experience that old men are a pretty bitter lot.

man finally I wrote something that people can actually rant about and not get hammered for my 3rd grade writing level

Thanks everyone!!

Now back to topic

I see where Bill is coming from. We are the only NATO country (at least from the European countries) that does not REQUIRE some sort of military or government service. I too would like to see something like this. I would rather see some sort of volunteer service rather than a draft, which I do feel we are headed for.

What? You want to see a required but voluntary service?

I agree with Bil on this issue. While I am opposed to an involuntary draft, I am also opposed to someone holding a higher office without remotely serving their country in some way before.

In the original post, Meik lists the Presidents who have held office, but not served in the military. Of those, only John Adams, John Quincy Adams, FDR, and maybe Martin Van Buren were worth a shit. The others are some of the worst Presidents this country has seen. Coincedence? The period from 1865 - 1901 was a "presidential wasteland" and much of that list falls in that era.

As far as being a nation of fat, lazy and ungrateful, well, sometimes the truth hurts.

Obama has served his country as a senator. Unless you are talking exclusively about military service then Obama has clearly served his country as has anyone who has held public office.

Now if we are talking strictly about military service then we may as well just give up and let this country become a police state.

reading the quote you put in there makes it seem like he's saying to obama..you didn't serve in the military so you shouldn't speak on my behalf about how i feel about people who did...i don't really take that as a quote that obama didn't serve therefore isn't qualifed

just my opinion on that

i also don't believe you need to be in the military to be a successful commander in chief...3/4 of them go into the service because they know it will look good on there resumes..not because they have some deep seeded patriotic views

and as for our presidents that were in power after the civil war...well they were a waste but thats because our country was relatively new and trying to rebuild our country after a brutal war while expansion of new technologies in all fields were popping up quicker than expected...i don't so much blame there inadaquacies as a person but more of it being in over there heads no matter who was president

Nice Andy! You are 100% right.
And can you really count our current president as serving? He dodged Vietnam.
