(yeah, i know i picked the Marlins, but the Phils are my team)
After last nights ridiculous showing...making Ryan Drese look like a Cy Young candidate and then having the bases loaded with no out in the ninth and not scoring in a 1-0 loss...maybe you're right about us being delusional!

Interesting little fun fact there. While we're completely off topic....

What is the origination of the Utah Jazz? (Coincidentally, one of only a few teams whose name does not end with the letter "s")

What is a Meadowland? (as in New Jersey). Is it like a field?

What is a Gamecock? Tarheel? Hoosier? Pacer?

I could go on for hours....stupidest name ever, Utah Utes.

I think the Utah jazz used to be the New Orleans Jazz.
A Meadowland is a place where corpses are dumped after they get whacked .

the meadowlands is built around a swamp area but it has rolling hills of swamp which looks like a meadow..hence the name...it should be called swampland or pile of shit..either one

The "Jazz" comes from the original location of the team which was in New Orleans...so they were the New Orleans Jazz.

Gamecock-- in the South, cockfighting was huge....so hence the Gamecock

Tarheel & Hoosier...I have no idea

Pacer--think Indianapolis 500...Pace Cars...very lame, but that's where it comes from

Utes--I thought this was the name of the indigenous Native Americans that live in Utah. I'm not 100% on this one.

I believe you are correct on the Utes thought.

Hoosier - Back in the day, when the phrase, "Whose yer Daddy" first became popular, the Indiana high school head coach from the movie coined it for his team that upset the big city school. In the interest of political correctness, yes, even back in the 50s they had to deal with it, the school administration dropped the "Daddy" reference and put the "Whose yer" together to form one word....Hoosier.

Tar Heel - The North Carolina school wanted so badly to be considered on par with the great UCLA teams coached by John Wooden. One of the basketball teams brightest players, academically, recalled visiting the La Brea Tar Pits while on a family vacation. He was also able, with his Dad, to catch a UCLA basketball game at Pauley Pavilion. While UCLA was beating some poor school, the players Dad said, "These guys are so good they wouldn't even catch tar on their heels if they played in those pits we saw yesterday!" The player went back to Carolina, told his team about the Tar Pits, the mighty Bruin basketball team and his Dad's comment. Another player commented that if the Carolina basketball team could play, even with a little bit of tar on their heel, as good as the UCLA team, they could compete for a national championship someday. The nickname stuck, due to the media of course, and shortly afterwards the Univeristy of North Carolina had their nickname.....Tar Heels.

You can look it up....

Taking the off topic convo just a little bit further.
Who would win the Indy 500 between Mario Andretti in a Indy race car, or
a Ford Pinto
Hint -
Mike Ditka is driving the Pinto
Answer:
DITKA......DA BEARS!

So,Mario Andretti in a Indy race car versus a Ford Pinto driven by Ditka's head and torso.
Winner: Ditka, but only by a lap.
