Himself, his team (would have been worse?), fantasy teams everywhere? Its nearly impossible to answer that logically in reality.

His stats were such that the voters just felt that he had to get the award. The beauty of the MVP is the fact that are no established statistical criteria. if there were there would be no discussion about it and no one would care. The best MVP debate I remember was 1978/Jim Rice-Ron Guidry. They both put up historical numbers for winning teams. The Yanks won the series and Guidry went 25-3 with a sub 2.00 ERA. Rice was an offensive monster. The argument was that pitcher shouldn't qualify as MVP. Rice won the MVP, Guidry and the Yanks won the playoff, pennant and world series. |

Another good debate. Pitchers have the Cy Young.Get the Batters an equal
best player award ,and then clearly define the MVP. |

Don't you think that the writers are biased in some instances. How can you see them as a "fair" vote?

Well of course they are, but so is everyone else. Its the only "fair" way to do it. Fans would be even more biased... and players would be basing their vote on what little they have seen. And mostly what they have heard from the writers.

If you make the MVP subject to specifiic criteria(i.e. particular stats) you remove any real debate. We never argue over who really deserved the batting title, you either led the league or didn't. The MVP system allows subjective anaylsis and voting and that is why it is a great award. Old Red Sox fans still seeth over Ted Williams not winning the 1941 MVP despite winning the Triple Crown. Albert Belle beat Mo Vaughn in ever statistical category in 96(?) and still didn't win. I like the MVP system just as it is, fair or not. |
