Thanks klicks!
When I first saw the Coulthard move I stood straight up out of my chair and screamed PENALTY! So my first impression was that the race stewards got it right. Then they replayed the radio info that Coulthard had recieved and then his resulting position on the grid and I thought the decision was fair. Keep in mind DC is the first to complain about blocking so when he got caught bad info or not I think it was quite fair. Don't forget for any F1 fans out there in the US the next 4 races Canada, USA, France and Britain are all on Fox. Not sure about your TV listings up there Canada klicks, I assume TSN, but I have full confidence you'll know where to watch. |

Agreed Gunner, I was just wondering if you thought the original penalty should have stuck instead of being reduced. Looking at just this event in isolation - F1A did the right thing (no intent so reduced penalty); but in general they do not typically give the benefit of the doubt - maybe it's a sign that they will be a little more judicial in doling out penalties, rulings etc? And you are right about DC being the most vocal about blocking - ironic that he is the culprit this time (albeit due to bad info).
Regarding TV coverage in Canada: always live on TSN and Speedvision (but no speedvision for the Montreal or US GP), and the US GP is not live on TSN. I think CTV may have it live, but anyone with cable would be able to watch live on Fox anyway. For all the other races - TSN. One nice thing is that TSN and Speedvision usually have commercials offset - so you can be wathing the race on TSN and when a commercial starts, you can flip to Speedvision and on good days as soon as the speedvision commercial starts you can flip back to TSN and their commercial is over. |

Surprise surprise - no McLaren team orders.
http://tsn.ca/auto_racing/news_story/?ID=209314&hubname= Like they'd EVER nail someone on this, unless it's super obvious like Schuie/Barreccelo a couple of years back. |

I pretty much agreed with what Jackie Stewart said at the end of the article. To me it looked like McLaren had the best cars on the day as evidenced by the fact that they finished so far ahead of Massa in the Ferrari. I think the FIA got this one right.

concur - I'm not even sure I have an issue with team orders anyway, I think FIA just wants to make sure team orders don't go so far as to ruin the race, as long as it is not obvious (leading driver purposely slowing to permit his teammate to gain the position ahead) I doubt they would penalize anyone - nor should they.

FORMULA ONE QUESTION:
Is there a site where I can get information on past Formula One drivers? An assocociate if mine says he used to drive Formula One. He has a 1970's style driving suit, photos in cars and such but he tells so many stories I have trouble sorting the wheat from the chaff. He has lots of money so it's possible he owned part of a team but he says he drove and was in an accident in a race. |

Ha, nice one klicks!
Anyways, what a race in Montreal! Tremendous action even with the four deployments of the safety car. Perhaps the newest superstar in the world Lewis Hamilton driving for McLaren Mercedes dominated the entire day, sitting at P1 on the grid and coming home for his first F1 race victory. This guy has the potential to become the biggest sporting story in 2007. Great job Lewis. Other interesting stuff, BMW driver Robert Kubica was involved in a horrendous accident which saw his car launch and then crash into the wall before the hairpin curve then violently tumble to s stop. Seeing that my heart was in my throat, thankfully by all accounts it seems Robert will be released from the hospital with only some minor scrapes. Two drivers were black-flagged on Sunday for leaving the pit area under a red light, Fillipe Massa of Ferrari and Giancarlo Fisichella of Renault were the two who got the black flags. A shot of Massa in the pit area after he had to park his car showed him giving the thumbs-down, to which the commentators said "read the rule book, dude." One driver didn't even make it off the starting grid. Jenson Button in the factory Honda had his car fail to get into gear while sitting on the starting grid ending his day very early. But perhaps the best moment came near the end of the race when Takuma Sato overtook Fernando Alonso. Sato driving for Super Aguri, the youngest and smallest team in F1, boldly overtook Alonso, who was having a rough day, for a 6th place finish. Sato's move had me jumping up and down and howling with excitement, thanks for that Takuma. Here are the finals results from Montreal; Pos Driver Team Laps Time/Retired Grid Points 1 Lewis Hamilton McLaren-Mercedes 70 1:44:11.292 1 10 2 Nick Heidfeld BMW 70 +4.3 secs 3 8 3 Alexander Wurz Williams-Toyota 70 +5.3 secs 19 6 4 Heikki Kovalainen Renault 70 +6.7 secs 22 5 5 Kimi Räikkönen Ferrari 70 +13.0 secs 4 4 6 Takuma Sato Super Aguri-Honda 70 +16.6 secs 11 3 7 Fernando Alonso McLaren-Mercedes 70 +21.9 secs 2 2 8 Ralf Schumacher Toyota 70 +22.8 secs 18 1 9 Mark Webber Red Bull-Renault 70 +22.9 secs 6 10 Nico Rosberg Williams-Toyota 70 +23.9 secs 7 11 Anthony Davidson Super Aguri-Honda 70 +24.3 secs 17 12 Rubens Barrichello Honda 70 +30.4 secs 13 Ret Jarno Trulli Toyota 58 Accident 10 Ret Vitantonio Liuzzi STR-Ferrari 54 Accident 12 Ret Christijan Albers Spyker-Ferrari 47 Accident 21 Ret David Coulthard Red Bull-Renault 36 Gearbox 14 Ret Robert Kubica BMW 26 Accident 8 Ret Adrian Sutil Spyker-Ferrari 21 Accident 20 Ret Scott Speed STR-Ferrari 8 Accident 16 Ret Jenson Button Honda 0 Gearbox 15 DSQ Felipe Massa Ferrari 51 Black flagged 5 DSQ Giancarlo Fisichella Renault 51 Black flagged 9 See you next weekend in Indianapolis for the United States Grand Prix! |

nice recap of the race Gunner. It was I think the most entertaining race so far this year. Nice to see Heidfeld nab second, and Renault and Toyota in the mix - shakes things up a bit. By the way, the lastest I heard on Kubica is that he has a broken leg - that was a scary crash, the fact that he ended up with relatively minor injuries shows you just how far the safety features have come, Jackie Stewart's legacy lives on!
Hats off (again) to Hamilton, looks like f1 has a new king. Sure would like to see Villenueve come back to take Kubica's seat while he mends, doubt this will happen but a guy can dream. This sure sets up interesting times for the US GP, can't wait! Once again - great job Gunner! |

Thanks for the update on Kubica's condition klicks. It was really amazing to see how well the car's monocoque held it's integrity during that crash. The safety of these cars is amazing. It will be interesting to see who will take his place in Indy.
Also another item to consider for Indy. This past weekend was the first time Lewis Hamilton raced at Montreal and this will be his first trip to Indy, the only F1 circuit with a banked curve. Right now I would not bet against him from winning at the Indy Motor Speedway. |

Lewis dominates the U.S. Grand Prix! Alonso gave him some work in the mid-laps but really only had one decent shot and trying to get by his young upstart teammate. The 2 McLarens were unchallenged, as were the 2 Ferraris for their 3-4 finish. Massa beat Raikkonen again - this is starting to be a trend. However, Raikkonen did turn int he fastest lap of the race. Excellent race by Rosberg until his engine blew with only 4 or 5 laps left, opening the door for the first teenager to ever get a point - 19 year old Sebastien Vettel, the BMW test driver who sat in for Kubicha and finished 8th for a single point. While there was only spotty action between the top 2 and 3/4 (with a large gap between the McLarens and Ferraris) there was some mighty fine racing in the mid-pack. Great wheel to wheel racing between Trulli and Webber, between Giancarlo Fisichella and Alex Wurz and between Fisichella and Jenson Button.
While the race was not as eventful and the Canadian GP, it was a good and entertaining race I thought. Wonder of if McLaren and Ferrari are starting to rethink their driver salaries - both have highly paid supposed number ones (Alonso and Raikkonen) who are being consistently beat by their teammates (Lewis and Massa) who make less money. How strong is McLaren? Fastest car and IMHO, the best 2 drivers on the planet. Ferrari has a ton of work to do if they want to make it interesting. It was nice to see Renault closing the gap and the Super Aguris beat the factory Hondas again! The results: 1. HAMILTON McLaren 1h39:09.065 2. ALONSO McLaren +1.5s 3. MASSA Ferrari +12.8s 4. RAIKKONEN Ferrari +15.4s 5. KOVALAINEN Renault +41.4s 6. TRULLI Toyota +66.7s 7. WEBBER Red Bull +67.3s 8. VETTEL BMW +67.7s 9. FISICHELLA Renault +1 lap 10. WURZ Williams +1 lap 11. DAVIDSON Super Aguri +1 lap 12. BUTTON Honda +1 lap 13. SPEED Toro Rosso +2 laps 14. SUTIL Spyker +2 laps 15. ALBERS Spyker +3 laps 16. ROSBERG Williams +5 laps 17. LIUZZI Toro Rosso +5 laps R. HEIDFELD BMW +18 laps R. SATO Super Aguri +60 laps R. COULTHARD Red Bull +73 laps R. BARRICHELLO Honda +73 laps R. SCHUMACHER Toyota +73 laps And by the way - turns out Kubicha did not have a broken leg - 'just' an ankle sprain and concussion, he is scheduled to return next race. |

Excellent recap there klicks!
My thoughts pretty much mirror what you stated. Not as dramatic as Montreal but Indy did prove that right now the McLarens are way ahead of everyone else and Ferrari really need to do some work to catch them. What to say about Lewis Hamilton though, my goodness. He is perhaps the best new sporting personality to launch onto the scene this year, all sports combined. The Super Aguris and their constant beating of the factory Hondas is tremendously entertaining, go you Super Aguris! |
