Great!
Now if we could just get over these 95 degree days I could start getting into the upcoming season.

Ha! Move up here to western Canada, been a month since we've seen 95! hell, we'll probably have snow by the time the Oilers play their first pre-season with the 'a' squad (as if they HAVE an A squad LOL).

How do all the fans up there feel about Kevin Lowe and the Penner contract?

re-Penner deal and Kevin Lowe.
I think most Oiler fans were pretty happy with the move - sure they are over-paying Penner for this year, but the hope is that he ends up being relatively cheap by last year. Fans seem to be giving Lowe the benefit of the doubt, and are accepting that the deal was made for the future (paying Penner what he will be worth). It's been viewed as positive becuase Lowe did SOMETHING, got shut out of the tier 1 UFA's but did land Souray which I think will help (PP and first pass out of the zone). Lot's of local sportswriters were worried about the bad karma the move migh cause, thinking the other GM's would be gunning to rape the oilers becuase Lowe broke the unwritten rule about RFA's. But whatever, I applaud the move - even if Penenr doesn't work out - becuase Lowe showed he's gonna do whatever it takes to try to make the Oilers a contender. Personally, I think they are stronger now (on paper) then they were last year. Penner was a good add, they need his size and hands, and for a big guy he can move, and they had tons of room in the cap; and still do. I think their problems are on the bench - still can't figure out why Lowe re-signed MacTavish long term as coach. To answer your question - the mood around town was mostly positive on the Penner signing, and it didn't hurt that he grabbed an RFA from the (now hated) Ducks, where Pronger ended up after last spring's fiasco. I figure the Oilers are gonna be srapping it out to make 8th in the conference - gonna make or miss by a game, probably goruped up with about 5 or 6 teams fighting over the bottom two playoff spots. |

Good to hear things are positive up there. We were thinking here, Burke would make out better just taking the first, second, and third round compensation picks especially considering their cap issues. But I guess it will be years before we see who got the better deal. I'm sure you guys must not be to fond of the Ducks GM after this quote
"We're going to take three draft picks back and given Kevin's recent performance, I expect them to be excellent picks," Burke said. OUCH!

well, I gotta give Burke credit for that shot - just a little subtle but quite the zinger. Actually, i don't think that quote got too much action here because the feeling around here was jsut that - may as well go after RFA's since we have a lot of draft picks and our drafting history is brutal for the past 10 years or so. I.E. I think most edmonton fans actually agreed with Burke's shot - and figured 'what's your point', we get a solid maybe more than solid player and only give up draft picks, which to the oilers are a waste anyway! The only negative Burke sentiments were when he whined so much about the move originally, and complained that Lowe never gave the courtesy call. THAT whining got lot's of bad press here. Deservedly so IMHO.

and I think the Ducks will make out just fine with the draft picks, and they have proven they know how to bring young talent in and let it mature; something the Oilers used to do but seem to have forgotten how lately. I still figure losing Penner pissed Burke off big time - hard to assess if it's because of ego or if he really though Penner was a big piece of the future Ducks. In the short term, the Duck still look good - especially if Scott Nieds decides not to retire
