Top 5 RB's Of All Time

Emmitt Smith has decided to retire from football. He was one of the most steady and reliable runningbacks of all time. Whenever a player like Emmitt decides to hang up the cleats, inevitably people tend to ask who is the greatest runningback of all time. The runningback position is one of the...

I gotta go with Sanders first as well. What that guy did was simply amazing. He made professional defensive players look like high school second stringers. Payton would be next on my list. Similar to what Sanders had to deal with in terms of surrounding talent, until the last couple years of his career. Payton NEVER avoided contact, even as a little guy, and hardly ever got hurt. Brown would be third on my list. Power and speed. The records he set while playing fewer games is remarkable. I really hate to say this, but OJ Simpson has to be mentioned. Kind of a Jim Brown mold in terms of power and speed but played on some very average teams. He did have a pretty good OL, though. Emmitt would be my number five. My arguement has always been that I didn't think Emmitt could do what Sanders and Payton did if he had to run behind those lines. Emmitt had the best OL in football. Put Sanders behind Emmitt's OL, and Sanders probably would have consistently run for 2,000 yards a season. Emmitt also had the best talent around him of the top four.

1. Sanders
2. Payton
3. Brown
4. Simpson
5. Smith

Point Man, agreed! O.J. was right there for my Top 5...

I can't believe no one else agrees w/Jim Brown...the man AVERAGED 5 yards a carry!!!!! This was back before passing was en vogue as well....he was a dominant force.

No, I agree with you. Jim Brown was one of the first great players in the game, and he is STILL the best to this day. Says quite a lot for not only him, but his predecessors.

1. Jim Brown
2. Barry Sanders
3. Walter Payton
4. OJ Simpson
5. Emmit Smith

I agree with Jim Brown. He was the foundation everyone else was compared to.

Eric Dickerson anyone?
