The (sports) Gospel According to Mark: Chaney bigger than one game
People are not going to remember John Chaney as a great man and a great basketball coach. They are not going to remember him for the great things he has done for the players who have been a part of his program, or for the fact that he did things the right way. Sadly, they are going to remember...

He may also be remembered for the Calipari incident.....
True, Chaney has apologized for those blunders and seems very sincere...problem is, like you said, those things remain in people's memory banks 'cause they are constantly on TV...the stuff in the stands and the teachings and stuff.... The thing is....is this the type of man you want coaching your son and/or being a mentor to? A man that can't keep his head in difficult situations like those listed? Sure, you can cite many different coaches as references, especially Bobby Knight.... Would Coach K have done that? Eddie Sutton? John Wooden? Once (the Calipari incident), okay, people have a meltdown. Twice? Well, maybe the man needs some help... I'm not an advocate of Chaney losing his job simply for a couple meltdowns....but people have lost their jobs for less...or at least the same. Who was the coach from ISU that lost his job over some photos of drinking with co-eds and kissing them? |
