Sports That Are Not Sports
If there's one thing I've come to really despise lately, it's the willingness to turn every meager activity into competition. No longer can one simply enjoy something for its own sake. No, instead you've got to be the best at it. Or at least be better than everyone else in the immediate vicinity....

So what do you think of paintball? I remember a thread where OriginalBob and I argued that to a stalemate.

My Take
If I were to say your article sucks, I'd be lying...I have the common respect of objectively reviewing a piece and seeing both the good & the bad. Writing is like art, some works may not inspire you but you can still see some of the beauty...This is how I feel about your article. Not a bad piece of work.
I agree that there are "sports" that shouldn't be called such...its hard to call bowling a sport when there is no interaction with one another and no defense and offense. However, boxing is DEFINITELY a sport...how you can say its not is totally wrong. There is offense and defense, there is a time limit, and only the most premium athletes participate in it. The fact that judges decide who is the winner does not take away from boxing being a sport. There are only rare times when the judges really come into play. With a boxing match there is usually a knockout, technical knockout or a clear-cut winner. There are only a few times when the judges really come into play....such is the same for baseball, basketball, hockey and football. There is normally a clear-cut winner, but sometimes the referees can determine the winner as well. A bad call had decided many of these games as well. All in all not bad. |

Just re-read it now, after giving it some time off. Boy, does this article suck. Serves me right for writing it so hastily. There are tensing errors, mixed modifiers, and it's way too wordy in some places. This thing is in definite need of a rewrite. It was mostly stream of consciousness the first time around, so I guess it's not bad for a first draft, but it's got no flow to it. Utter crap.
I might edit it later, because its annoying me now. Will that violate the bet? |

nascar ...hmm we argue about it all the time at work wether or not its a sport.
its fits your time limit rule, also drivers can try to score more points through winning more races or acheive faster winning times. your coin toss rule in football...FOOTBALL is a SPORT....if anyone says different they are a complete idiot and should seek help.

How about something like swimming. Would you consider that to be turn-based? It's head to head and techniques like drafting and particular race strategies can directly effect the performance of your opponent...Sport or no?

By this dipshits definition, swimming IS a sport, given the time limit rule. I also agree that it is a sport, especially compared to Poker, X-Games, and WWE.
Nascar......Not so much. For the most part, the machine does the work (yes, the drivers are skilled, but NOT athletes). |

That's like saying football, basketball, golf, and baseball aren't sports because the ball does most of the work. The driver still works not to mention the pit crews.

But the ball doesn't do the work in those sports, the athletes do, and that is what NASCAR is lacking.

How do you differentiate between an arm throwing a ball and an arm steering a wheel
and changing gears. Oh,the car changes it's own tires I guess.

I didn't say they were not skilled, I simply said they are not athletes. I think Richard Petty is one of the coolest guys around, but he is NOT an athlete.
By your argument, the guy driving and doing maintenance on the Zamboni is an athlete. Last edited by Shane; March 18th, 2005 at 02:05 PM. |

What about a field goal kicker?
They seem skilled but not much of an athlete? Golf, again, more skill, not really athletics. The zamboni driver is not involved in the competition The pit crew is. But anyway,I thought the topic was wether or not Nascar was a sport.

It's funny you should mention field goal kickers. I never really considered them to be very athletic....until high school. The field goal kicker for our high school football team was not only an awesome field goal kicker, but he dominated every other sport as well.
We graduated, and I forgot about him. When I was in my senior year of college, I was sitting in a bar one Sunday afternoon, and looked up at the TV. There he was, the guy I went to high school with, kicking field goals in the NFL. I don't remember what team he was playing for, but his name is Brandon Brookfield. Maybe someone knows who he played (or plays?) for. Anyway, back to NASCAR. Not a sport. Although, you keep mentioning the pit crews. I have a lot of respect for what they do. I could not do it. But they are mechanics with a streamlined procedure, that move rapidly. NOT athletes. |
