Making the Jump

By Sara Normand

Thousands of screaming fans. Songs blasting from the band. Youths everywhere jumping up and down. Flashing lights and excitement. Intensity. Star-struck fans. Everyone chanting familiar words. No, I’m not talking about a rock concert. This is college basketball, and this is an...

Your article is great, i really enjoyed it but I have to make this one statement. One thing to take into consideration also is that tons of college fans follow their teams becuase the schools they follow are local and they may not have a pro team that they can watch or go to games without travling vast distances. College sports will always have more fans due to the number of schools. Players come and go, but that is a fact in the NBA also.

Great article though Sara

Sara,

I would like to say that this is a very good article...I'm very impressed with your tackling of this subject that is so very central to American sports nowadays.

I agree with you on many different points, and there were only a few things that I would add. The first thing would be to talk about how professional basketball became successful in the 80s. It was due to teamwork, skill, and unselfishness. Having Jordan, Magic, and Bird didn't hurt as well.

I like the San Francisco Dons example...especially because I'm a West Coast guy...but I might have used a different team or scenario. San Francisco played Gonzaga tough because they match up very well against Gonzaga. As you can see they lost by 2 at the "Kennel", and that by itself is an accomplishment. Plus, San Francisco's home court only averages like 2,000 people or so(and I bet half of those people were from Spokane). I think if you use UCLA-Washington as your example it shines a lot better. They hold similar spots in the Pac-10 as SF-Gonzaga in the WCC...and its a much more dramatic differential.

I like how you talked about the meaning of every game...you were right on about that.

Excellent article.

Avery
