| College Sports This forum is about some weird social strata involving brow-beating, bragging, one-upsmanship and self-proclaimed superiority. Not necessarily involving athletics. |

First Illinois, then Cleveland, Washington, and Florida State to follow?
http://www.sportsline.com/collegefootball/story/8295844
Two things alone to point out. #1, If that kid who's embarrassed by "his heritage being reduced to a halftime dance" actually finds his personal well-being affected by something like a college halftime show, then he needs to get with self-help books, not pointing at the big bad collegiate empires who supposedly are making his life so 'miserable'. #2, I personally vote for a white-power/white-supremicist symbol and mascot to replace the Native American one, just to see how satisfied and at ease the plaintiffs would actually be if it were indeed changed. Seriously, can't you just see the gasps of excitement? |

I'm not denying that native americans got a raw deal years ago...so let's give in a make a change.
How about this for a new name that more accurately represents the native american in today's society: ...The Illinois Pit Bosses ...The Cleveland Gamblers ...The Washington Black Jacks ...The Florida State Roulettes etc. |

I read an article some time ago and I wish I could find it now that says most American Indians aren't bothered by these teams and it is mostly a small number of activists who raise such a stink about it.

And yet those are the voices everybody hears, no matter the subject - the small, vocal minority gets all the coverage and it is outright assumed that everybody of that particular culture/social division thinks and feels the same way.

I read/heard the same thing Insanity is talking about...like jtg is saying, if you make enough noise no matter how large a group of people, you'll be heard. That's what the media likes nowadays....controversy. It used to be sex that sells...now its controversy.
Maybe because I'm not a Native American, but I've never understood why it is so offensive to have knicknames like Indians, Braves, Chiefs, Seminoles, etc. Isn't what they were actually called? Redskins I could understand, but the others are perplexing to me. |

I'm annoyed that the Indians have phased out Chief Wahoo somewhat in the last couple of years. They have that stupid script "I" they like to use now and put that on their alternate and spring training unis.
