| College Sports This forum is about some weird social strata involving brow-beating, bragging, one-upsmanship and self-proclaimed superiority. Not necessarily involving athletics. |

Im all for a winning program but I gots bills to pay!
Well the new (and maybe improved) AD Gene Smith has officially taken
over at Ohio State. Looking at a few articles I have to admit I have some questions about the new campaign that is trying to integrate him into the OSU culture. For example Smith is introduced a "Buckeye" however, it seems being raised in Cleveland is that only claim to fame. He went to college at Notre Dame and as far as I can research the biggest program hes run is Arizona State. Which to his credit seems to be infraction free according the NCAA site. Which does seem to be an improvement over his predecessor. However being a college student I would like to point out that Tuition has skyrocketed in the past five years. In 2000, a full time student residing in Ohio paid only $1,472 per quarter in tuition, or $4,416 per year. Today, incoming full-time freshmen pay $2,514 per quarter, which translates into $7,542 per year. That is an increase of over 70% in four years! While the tuition board insists that belts are being tightened, Smith will receive a total compensation package that could be worth from $500,000 to $600,000. The man he'll replace, Andy Geiger, makes from $325,000 to $350,000. According to Holbrook, his base salary will be in the range of $450,000 per year, and he will have incentives that will allow him to earn as-much-as $600,000 per year. I have to arch my eyebrows and keep my hand on my checkbook. Lets hope Mr. Smith is worth it. :4-diss3: |

I'd look at Ms. Holbrook's salary and what she does before you look at the AD (and the amount of money the department brings in) and what he gets paid.

Oh I got that reply already set
Karen Holbrook This year, Holbrook will be paid $437,000. Her contract includes a mansion, a housekeeper, two cars, a driver, $100,000 in deferred compensation and a yearly bonus for performance. This represents the third year of a 5-year contract that began in 2002 with a salary of $325,000. Holbrook is among the top 20 public university presidents in terms of salary, ranking 12th. As for the song and dance about the Money brought in by the football program Andy Geiger went on record in a report to the USG senate that the football program brought minimal monies to the table in an attempt to garner more funds from the state. Which apparently I would have had to fail second grade math to believe that. Especially with the increases of ticket prices, the minimal contributions made to thos groupd who donate their time on saturdays , and if nothing else parking. So Yes I will say the New AD is overpaid as well as most of the Ohio State upper management. If tuition increases have hampered your ability to get an education, you may perhaps find consolation in knowing that budget cuts have not affected her lifestyle.

Well I'm not exactly sure how the funding of the athletic department works, but I wouldn't be surprised if a good deal of money that came in went to repay the debt that arose from the renovation of Ohio Stadium.
And I really don't think the four years of tuition I paid to the Ohio State University went to pay Andy Geiger's salary. I'd say it went to pay for all the construction that Ms. Holbrook has wanted all over campus. Construction which was abundant six months ago when I last set foot in the campus area. |

Im wondering If we are on the same page. I am HUGE fan of football. I am a huge fan of the athletics department. But, this being a sports forum I only wanted to focus on the athletic issues facing the U. I will gladly agree with you on the construction (which is still going on) The olentangy bridge monstrosity (that thing is UGLY) I think its the architect building that has been dammed by students and faculty alike for being the worst planned building ever (nilla wafer sized mail boxes) drinking fountains from elementary schools) HAHA we can discuss hundreds of ways I think that my tuition is being flushed. But I still think the biggest hypocrisy is coming from those who deny that the footall team (mainly) does not make the U money. It nothing more than the university makes at least 10 percent on any item that contains reference to the university. T shirts books watches what ever. Are there other abuses yes but I think they are still a seperate beast than what these pages contain.

The football program doesn't bring money in to the school. What it does is allows for the rest of the department and programs to exist.
As for the school (which I LOVE talking about), I was wondering how the architecture building turned out. Is it even done yet? I actually liked the Lane Avenue bridge. And now that you mention drinking fountains, I always found that the best one located on campus was in the third floor of the Biology & Zoology building (I think it's called Jennings Hall now). Memories. Just a couple of questions, is the medical center area still all messed up? And did they tear down Lord Hall yet? I was scared to walk by that place as I always thought it would collapse on me. (Thankfully I had most of my classes in the friendly confines of the business school). Sorry, I got carried away there. Heh. |
