Dodgers/Giants: One of the Best Rivalries Around

Dodgers/Giants—One of the Best Rivalries Around, by Avery Smith

The 2005 baseball season is about to start, and there are so many unknowns. Do the Padres have enough offense to win the NL West? Will Atlanta capture the division crown for the 14th year in a row? Can my disdain for...

Avery, let me fire the first shot! We won the game today from four to two, you must be bleeding that dodger blue. Actually was a very good game, nice way to start off the season.

The San Francisco giants and the Los Angeles dodgers do have the oldest rivalry in baseball dating back to 1889; even the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox did not start that early. It’s actually a fact that the rivalry can be traced back to the 1860’s.

Being a giants fan since I was six years old I can remember going to Candlestick Park by myself watching Willie McCovey and Darrell Evans clay almost every day. I hit it the Los Angeles dodgers with a passion I still do, I was well, and until the day I die.

The only Los Angeles dodger that comes to my mind has to be Steve Garvey, who throughout his career was an outstanding offensive player. He just killed the giants, I mean I have no idea what his actual lifetime statistical batting average is against my team, but let me tell you it was remarkable. The guy had no stance; he was probably the calmest hitter ad that I’ve ever seen.

One of the things that I’ve always wanted to do was to travel to New York City and sit down and listen to the stories from some of the fans when the New York giants played the Brooklyn dodgers. I think some of the stores would just be outstanding.

Again Avery, very well written historical view on the oldest rivalry in baseball! I look forward to the rents between you and I was entire baseball season.

Mike,

We got you guys back last night 10-4!!! The Giants bullpen is terrible, and Benitez is useless unless the game is close. Yeah, the rivalry is unbelievable, and I have met many Giants fans who I consider (gulp) friends because of it.

The guy I hated was Robbie Thompson. I couldn't stand that guy. He was the Giants second baseman for like forever, and he would kill the Dodgers. The Garv was the man, and he was one of my all time favorites.

I am heading to NYC next spring and I will definitely check out Brooklyn. From what I hear the original home plate at Ebbets field is still there and I must see that! It will definitely be a very fun season, let the games begin!!!
