Larry Cochell - JackAss Of The Week May 1st, 2005 - May 7th, 2005

For making racial comments about black players, i mean where does this guy get off for doing this! He is a complete jackass and should win it for the year

there is more to this article, you can view the whole article on this ass after reading the following small story
The OU baseball team was without its head coach Friday night in an 8-1 loss to No. 5 Nebraska.

Head coach Larry Cochell was absent from L. Dale Mitchell Park due to allegations made by ESPN in its 6 p.m. broadcast of “SportsCenter.”

News came from ESPN to OU officials just two hours before Friday’s game that Cochell made racially insensitive comments in a private meeting with the network’s commentators prior to Tuesday night’s ESPN2/ESPNU televised game at Wichita State.

Cochell gave praise to freshman outfielder Joe Dunigan, a black student-athlete, during a pre-game chat with that night’s play-by-play commentator Gary Thorne, according to Josh Krulewitz, Director of Media Relations for ESPN.

According to an ESPN report, once Dunigan returned to the field, Cochell turned to Thorne and said, “There’s no n----- in him.”

Krulewitz said Thorne didn’t tell anyone until Friday morning when he discovered a similar comment had been made to analyst Kyle Peterson that same night.

According to ESPN, Cochell’s comment to Peterson was, “There are honkies and white people and there are n----- and black people. Dunigan is a good black kid.”

I wouldn't call him a jackass for this.

Seems like that n---- would be the bad area of the "black people".

Stupid, or may I say, ill-informed, but understood if take time to understand.

Blown out of proportion really.

Rick Adleman get jackass of the week for claiming the Sonics Reggie Evans flops when the air conditioner is turned on in the building.

Please.

Adleman was the coach who allowed Vlade Divac to make a career of flopping. Hell with Adleman's approval, Divac has the hardwood imprinted on his back side.

Keep crying Rick, your team is going down, and the Queens are still ugly.

The place I hear the word the most today is with the black community. It is used in music, comedy, and everyday speech. They call each other "nigga" all the time. How does a guy lose his job by saying that someone is a good black kid and not a nigger. I think the politically correct society we live in would be the chief jackass.

Making that comment as a representative of the university,he had to resign or be fired.
A major institution cannot accept that word being used no matter what the context.
A white person using the word and a black person using the word are like comparing
oil and water IMO.

Makes no sense to say to say one race can utter words that another race cannot, especially when they aren't calling names.

Definately. Coming from the university standpoint they can not allow it to be used on their area especially by their faculty.

Its always been like this, and Im sure it isnt changing any time soon. The Rights Movement is too close in time to allow for the use of it. Even now we are iffy around racial slangs/terms

It makes total sense if you look back just 40 years ago when too many white people used the word in it's crudest form.

Explain to me where the word came from. How does it look in its "crudest" form. From your earlier comments, there is no difference in its form. It is all to be damned. Even ESPN won't even mention the word. We have more profanity on tv today than ever before but the"n"word cannot be uttered, even in a news story.
This is total bullshit. I don't use the word ever, but I be damned if I think someone today should be punished for something someone said 40 yrs ago in its "crudest" form. Can someone of a mixed race say it half the time and it be ok?
Please explain why this term is more offensive than other racial names. Do blacks use the word SPIC or WETBACK? Sure they do. But I suppose since they were wronged somewhere back in history, they get a free pass. And they probably haven't used it yet in its "crudest" form.

I only used that expression to differentiate it's use from your example:
"The place I hear the word the most today is with the black community. It is used in music, comedy, and everyday speech."

Look,I'm in over my head with you.
My only advice to you is to take a racial sensitivity course.
