Mavs letting Finley go good for both sides?

Now for the record I am a big Finley homer, if for no other reason than when the Mavs were bad ( I mean when they were REALLY bad) Mike never asked for a trade and never complained. All he did was continue to be the sole bright spot on the team.

I would like nothing more than for Fin to win a ring with the Mavs, unfortunately it does not appear that will be the case. With this new CBA, teams will be allowed to dump one player and not be charged the luxary tax. This move will allow the Mavs to save a minium of 51Mil and after other conditions are considered as much as 80Mil. This is a no brainer business move for the team and a potential windfall for Fin. The Mavericks will still be responsible for the contract amount and Fin can sign on with another team for (most likely) their mid-level exception. This will in effect allow him to double-dip so to speak, not to mentioned play for another team that has a very good chance to win a ring.

My bet: The Mavericks dump his salary and he gets picked up be the suns. What an ironic turns of events that would be if it comes true. In any case Mike, if you are not here next year...
Thank you.

Not under the new CBA. If a team opts to use this "one time only" loophole then the player that they release cannot resign until after the term of the original contract expires. In Fin's case 3 years.

I don't think so. Word is, Shawn Bradley is headed to the nets in a straight up trade for j. kidd.

I agree....Finley is gone. He has always been my favorite Mav for the reasons you said, Nick. I wish him the best and hope he signs with a team he can help. The class act that he is, I'm sure he'll understand the business side of being released.

If he does sign with another team, wouldn't the amount of his contract with the new team be deducted from what the Mavs owe him? No one is gonna sign him for more than a couple mil a year, at best, but I don't think he gets full value of both contracts.

It is my understanding that he would indeed receive the full value of both contracts. The league had to agree to this in order for the players union to sign off on thier players getting cut.

Then he won't get too much in a contract. I doubt you see a bidding war for his sevices. His shooting has declined, he's never played defense and he has missed game the past three years due to injury, and his age is against him. Like I said, Fin has always been one of my favorite players, so I'm not knocking him. I'm sure these things will come up when a contract is discussed, however, including that fact that he will still get PAID by the Mavs. What is the veteran minimum? 'Cause I'm positive he won't get more than that.

I dunno. I'm certainly not predicting a biddig war but he could be of good use to a few teams. phoenix and denver come to mind. I imagine he'll get the mid level exception wherever he goes...in the 2MIL/yr range.

He could end up with the Warriors, they seem to take the NBA oldies, Finley should retire, he is washed up

He was about as helpful to the Mavs as a flat tire
