I hear the best tailgaiting is done in the SEC, Georgia, Ole Miss, Auburn, Bama, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Florida. I have all heard good things about....however I have never ventured out of state, I know Nebraska has a huge following, but I don't know if they tailgate.....Lubbock is allright, Austin there is no reason to sit in the parking lot, The red river shootout is a great atmosphere before the game, but inside the State Fair not neccessarily tailgating wise......

I've been to home games for UCLA, Oklahoma, Alabama, Colorado, Miami, Florida State, Illinois, SMU, TCU, Texas, Baylor and the actual Cotton Bowl. Okay, not a great list to choose from for comparison sake, I realize.
But, from that list, UCLA, Oklahoma and Alabama are far and away better than the others. Suprisingly, Texas, Miami and Florida State were disappointing. There wasn't a lot of room to have a good tailgate. I know someone will say I'm a homer, but UCLA was the best. The Rose Bowl is surrounded by a golf course which allows for a tremendous amount of room. The scenery, geographically and otherwise, were outstanding. Alabama had to have the best people I experienced of all the schools. The fans were great. The atmosphere was incredible. Being on campus, the room was a little bit limited, but not like Texas or Miami. Of course, great barbecue! Oklahoma is another on campus environment and again, the fans were excellent. The tailgate areas were spread out around the campus and in to the town, which was pretty cool. Colorado had a area like Alabama in that it was spread throughout the campus, but the fans were terrible and the atmosphere just seemed bland. Nice campus, but the fans really ruined it for me. Baylor, TCU and SMU seemed to be the same as Texas....not a lot of room. Must be a Texas thing. Actually, SMU was probably a better atmosphere than Texas. Illinois actually wasn't all that bad. A lot of room and cool fans for the most part. My rankings for what I've seen: 1. UCLA 2. Oklahoma 3. Alabama 4. Florida State 5. Illinois 6. SMU 7. Colorado 8. Texas 9. TCU 10. Miami 11. Baylor As far as the Cotton Bowl, the game was 11 am CT on New Years Day, so you can imagine the lack of participation! |

I haven't been to enough college tailgaters to have much of an opinion, but I certainly agree with KP on CU.
I went to a CU v. Nebraska game in Boulder. Granted I had a good time, the fans were obnoxious. They were vandalizing any car with Nebraska plates, and being downright ridiculous. It can be a fun town, but not on game day. Those people are nucking futs. |

Why would you expect any less of CU fans? I believe they were the last college football venue to stop selling alcoholic beverages in the stadium. I heard some nasty stories about CU fans filling their beer cups with urine and tossing them on Nebraska fans. Oh well, nothing out of the norm in their eyes.

As for the urine-filled beer cups, I can't say I'd ever heard anything about that, but I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest. CU, however, has really cracked down on the important issues at football games: now they won't let us throw marshmallows at halftime. |

I think what settled us down was the fact that, before the 2001 CU-Nebraska game, a Nebraska player was quoted as saying that "they don't consider this a rivalry." CU then went on to win 3 of the next 4 games against the Huskers. Maybe then we realized that they had to take us seriously and so we got serious too. Or something like that. I don't know. I've been drinking since noon. |

As far as I know, the mashmallows has been a tradition for a number of years now - mid 90's perhaps. Students would sneak them in under their clothes, hidden in pocket sor under shirts or in coats.
Last season, the security officials at Folsom Field seriously cracked down on people bringing marshmallows into the stadium, going so far as to set up a rather elaborate security checkpoint at the student entrance. Every student entering gets lightly patted down before they are admitted - arms, sides, legs, small of the back. If anyone is caught bringing marshmallows or alcohol into the stadium, they are subject to having their tickets revoked for the entire season. I personally think that CU officials are passing up a fairly good business opportunity. If they sold packages of about 10 marshmallows apiece for a couple bucks inside the stadium, they could easily make a few hundred dollars off that every home game. If they allowed the students to throw marshmallows in the stadium - but only the ones that were sold inside the gates - things would be alright. The marshmallow fights usually start up about two minutes before halftime. My first year at CU (two yearsd ago) hundreds of marshmallows would be flying at any given time, all across the 30 yards and half of the south endzone that make sup the student section. A few idiots throw them at the band when they march out for the halftime show and when they return to the sidelines, but those are few and far between. In the 2003 season for one game Doritos was doing a promotion at the stadium in which they left a small bag of baked Doritos tortilla chips on every seat in the stadium. And some idiots threw them. I'd rather get hit with a marshmallow than a flying tortilla chip any day of the week. Those fuckers are sharp. |

I gotta go with Rock who said that the best was in the SEC. You gotta see some of these peeps to believe 'em. Been to Arkansas, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, South Carolina and Vanderbilt games. These peeps bust out food like you would not believe. And then in many instances they'd rather watch the game from the parking lot where they can eat and drink and be merry. Even get the occassional peep show
