The Jester’s Quart: Create Your Own Steroid Apology!

I liked Rafael Palmeiro a lot better when he was shaking his fingers at Congress instead of keeping them plugged in his ears.

There was something inspiring about Raffy sitting before all of those old white guys, defiantly denying that he had injected, ingested, or invested in steroids of any...

I really don't think anyone cares about steroids as much as the media and the government wants to think they do.

It's entertainment. They're athletes. So what. I don't know a single soul losing sleep over any of this. Or maybe it's different in America, but in Canada you can smell the "plants" by the phone-in sports talk radio shows a mile away; people who are SHOCKED and STUNNED to learn that this is going on, calling and complaining that the role models they looked up to are frauds, that all the stats are tainted, that pro sports has truly lost its innocence and they will never regard the games they love the same way again. Boo hoo. Truly melodramatic stuff, and by melodramatic I mean transparent and staged.

Overall, the general sentiment seems to be of mass casual indifference. Of the "look how hard I can sigh" variety.

I think there is genuine outrage at the steroid scandal, especially from baseball fathers who use the sport as some sort of virtuous life lesson for their kids when it's just a fucking sport.

That said, I think banging the drums to "clean up" the sport is just preposterous. No one had a problem with steroids when McGwire and Sosa were saving the sport from its own self-made abyss. And if you didn't think there were steroids in baseball then, you obviously had never seen Jose Canceso or noticed that light-hitting shortstops were now averaging 25 home runs a season...and then leaving the league shortly thereafter.
