Derrek Lee
Ive looked through the threads and nobody is even talking about Derrek Lee. He is leading Batting Avg by 16 points with .350, he is 3 HR's behind Andruw Jones with 37, and has 91 RBI's 7 behind Pujols. I as a Chicago Cubs fan dont think he will win the Triple Crown, but I strongly believe he is MVP material, and by the end of the year he will win the MVP if he keeps this up.

I totally agree that Lee should be a frontrunner for MVP. Problem, he doesn't get the national (ESPN-type) of hype that AJ and AP get.
It sucks, it's not right....but it just is.

LMAO! I pictured CU stomping his feet and pounding his fist while typing that!
My question is... what exactly is he the MVP of? A team in 4th place and 6 games under .500? The award is MOST VALUABLE PLAYER... not player of the year.

No one is talking about Lee because he simply doesn't deserve the MVP award:
A. The Cubs have almost no shot of making the playoffs. B. He has totally cooled off. Pre All-Star Break he was hitting .378/27/72. Post All-Star break he is .295/12/22. His OBP is down from .452 to .394. |

It just is always who the most popular player is. There is precedent of a player winning on a losing team....see Andre Dawson and Alex Rodriguez. Lee would have to blow away AJ and AP with his numbers, but they're all so close Lee won't sniff the award.

AJ will get the MVP imho. He is having his best year in the league while carrying the Braves into the postseason. With Chipper on and off the DL and no one to lead, he has done more than i ever expected.
But i must say one thing, Jeff Francouer is simply amazing right now. His arm is insane and he seems to have an eye for making contact. He didnt show much in AA but he sure has kicked some major ass. Go Braves! Phils suck! Mets suck more! |

Hey Goat, F the Braves!!!
Anyway... Jones should win the MVP award hands down. This shouldn't even be close. Unless of course he chokes and sucks down the stretch. But no one was more valuable to their team than he was this season (so far of course). With all their injuries and rookies in the line-up, he was the one staple you could count on to hold everthing together. IMO, if it wasn't for Jones, the Braves wouldn't be leading the division. KP, there is a definition of the award, but the voters has misconstrued (sp) it time and time again. It is not the player of the year award, it is for the player who is most valuable to his team.

Hmmm....I always read/heard from voters that there wasn't a hardcore definition, but an understood definition. Gammons, Stark...guys like that.
In any event, I don't think there should be much complaint if any of the three win.

MLB Most Valuable Player Award
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. (Redirected from MLB Most Valuable Player award) In the game of baseball, both amateur and professional, it is tradition to annually recognize the one player in the league who has contributed the most to the success of the player's team. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MLB_Mos...e_Player_award All i could find... not sure if there is an "offical" definition, but I know this is what the award was intended for when it first started.

Is AJ on the juice? His best offensive year was 2003 when he went .277/36/116. He's already got more HRs and should get more RBI. He could end up at .270/55/130, which is a really big jump over his career numbers. Maybe a little fishy...

The Cubs start off every season talking about how this is “their year” and that they finally have the tools to win. There even seems to be a sense of entitlement and arrogance despite the fact that they have done nothing in almost 100 years to warrant any kind of respect. The more you watch them the more you realize that it’s their own fault that they suck and they really don’t deserve your loyalty or your pity. It would be one thing if they tried to improve but, like the high school geek, the Cubs feel that you should be happy with what you get from them, no matter how mediocre. The American attitude tends to reward perseverance and effort, no matter the result. On the flip side, it seems that complacency and incompetence are particularly irritating. The Cubs seem to have both of those qualities in abundance. It’s no wonder people don’t like them. |
