RIP - Boxer Levander Johnson Dies After Fight

Last Saturday night, boxer Levander Johnson took a pounding in the ring vs. Jesus Chavez. The ref finally stopped the fight in the 11th round when Johnson was totally unable to defend himself. Johnson walked from the ring into the dressing room, where he suddenly collapsed. He was immediately rushed to the hospital where they found he had a large blood clot in his brain. The doctors quickly put Johnson in a medically induced coma and administered the brain surgery. Levander was showing signs of progress, but 5 days later, he couldn't fight it anymore and passed away.

Johnson was a warrior in the sport of boxing. He fought all the best fighters he could, and never backed down to anyone. Which, in the end, could be the reason for such an early death. After hearing of his injury after the fight, everyone in the boxing world was praying for his recovery. Not praying that he will be able to step in the ring again... praying that the sport that gave him so much would not take him away from his wife and 4 children.

RIP Levander

Think they should have to wear head gear?

Thats a very good question. One for which I don't know how to answer. Sure, after hearing this news my knee jerk reaction would be, "YES, make them all wear head gear to help prevent this". But when I step back and look at the sport as a whole, this type of thing is a very rare occurance. Also, with head gear, I fully believe the popularity of the sport will dramaticly decrease. Boxing thrives on its brutality... people watch because of its brutality... boxers get paid so well because of its brutality and peoples love for brutality. Head gears significatly decrease the brutality of the sport.

That being said, I don't know how I would feel about making all boxers use them. It's their life, why not give them a choice to wear them or not in each fight. What do you think?

Then again, hockey had to go through with a head gear rule too back in the day..Now we are all used to it.I sort of think boxing survives more for the gambling aspect then the brutality aspect these days.
