Oh yeah, and I LOVE this paragraph! I mean why don't we just save everyone some time at night and ONLY do the shootout? That would give us an extra 2 hours to spend with our families or do chores we needed to do.

But hey, there’s now a tradition of having one set of rules for the regular season and another for the playoffs. Like, for example, ending those first "meaningless" 82 games with a shootout -- that contemptible sideshow that ensures a winner in every game it’s featured in, without a single pass being completed or a defenseman on the ice.

Why not just have them play a hand of Texas Hold’em instead?

I never said people were staying home because of shootouts.

Just makes no sense to me that a hard fought game for 65 minutes will be decided by 3 penalty shots. No passing, no defense, no stratagy, NO HOCKEY!

I watched one last night after the Flyers game, and I was disgusted. Sorry, but it seems the vast majority of hockey fans on this board seem to agree. The only reason I have to like it is because the Flyers will win more games this way with the offensive players they have.

Have you been to any games? Where are the people walking out when the shoot out starts? Why are all the fans cheering and standing on their feet?
We have a few whiney people here that can't accept change.

I will reserve final judgement on the new rules until I see something more than pre-season games. The biggest one seems to be the shootout. North American sports fans dislike ties. We want to see someone come away with the victory. As long as there are no shoot outs in the Playoffs I am ok with this rule for two reasons.

1st.
The shoot out may put some fire into some teams near the end of regulation to avoid the shoot out. Meaning a team that is not confident of getting a result if it comes to a shoot out may in fact try to win the game in regulation thereby increasing the excitement at the end of the game.

2nd.
With the shoot out, teams may opt to employ someone who has talent in this aspect of the game versus signing a player who has no talent and can only make the papers when he drops the gloves. In other words, maybe there will be fewer thugs and goons in the league.

I never said I wasn't going to watch it. That's silly. I'm a hockey fan.

That said, the shootout isn't hockey, and I'd hate to see my team miss the postseason because its three shooters weren't as good as someone elses, even though its 5 skaters were just as good as the other team's for 60 minutes.

Interesting, isn't it, that you used the same argument for the shootout (Where are the people walking out when the shoot out starts? Why are all the fans cheering and standing on their feet?) that I always use for fighting. Except the NHL thinks one will sell tickets and the other won't, for some reason.
