The Greatest Nose-dive in Sports History?
Yesterday the defending Western Champions of the CFL, the BC Lions, lost the Western Championship to their hated arch-rivals, the Edmonton Eskimos. Next week's heralded Grey Cup will have the Eskies against the Eastern powerhouse Montreal Allouettes.
The Grey Cup is being hosted by BC. This was... Full Article |

My nomination would go to the 2001 Seattle Mariners:
- Hosted the 2001 All-Star Game (8 Mariners were on the AL squad) - AL-record 116 regular season victories - Ichiro Suzuki wins the AL Rookie of the Year and the AL MVP - Lou Piniella wins AL Manager of the Year - 3-0 sweep of the Chicago White Sox in the first round - 4-1 loss to the Yankees in the ALCS The Mariners destroyed just about everybody in their first 165 games, but in their last five they were completely demolished by a Yankees team that went on to lose to the Diamondbacks in seven in the 2001 World Series. This doesn't really count as a nose-dive, since the Mariners were a great team all the way up to the ALCS, but they were absolutely taken apart by the Yankees. 2001 was never said to be Seattle's year, but the way they'd played for 6 1/2 months, it should have been their year, and it wasn't. It only took them five games to collapse and to have their title dreams dashed, but those five games were all the Yankees needed to get it done. But that's just my two cents. |

My nominee would be 1995-96 Newcastle United. They had a 12 point lead in the league in April, the season ends in May. Manchester United caught them and the meltdown of Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan was entertaining if nothing else. Keegan folded under the pressure exerted by Sir Alex Ferguson and Man Utd.

Does Golf count?
What about Greg Norman's lead in the masters where he blew like a 10 shot lead on the final round What about the SF Giants having a 12 game lead at the start of September in 1993 ( i believe ) and lost to the Braves on the final day of the season and won 103 games. There are tons of sports stories which could count as the greatist nose dive in sports, so many across the world that it is hard to state which one would count I would think that every fan, which followed their teams, could tell you of a meltdown.... just seems like a vaugue subject BUT the article was great, and as always, well done Ish |
