Speaking Out in the NHL
by Missy_K
The players, coaches, fans of a sports team are involved because they have a passion for the game; they want to be there. With passion comes the desire to speak out, to find a voice, to make some noise. If you're a fan, you want to be a part of the game as much as you can; that's the... Full Article |

Yo Missy,
Thanks for joining the Rant. I love your article, but as per usual, I have a few comments. Quote:

A year ago I had the privelege of interviewing Dan Hinote. He more or less said, that throughout their careers they are coached on what to say in an interview. He went on to say that guys like Brett Hull can say what they want, because they are guaranteed a slot in the HOF. It comes down to stature. Hinote has NONE, Hull has it all, and Avery has NONE. There are many more, and I plan to isolate them as well. Last edited by Shane; November 22nd, 2005 at 11:22 AM. |

That's why they get paid the big bucks.
If I had a $4 million salary, you can bet I'd be saying "yes sir, no sir, 3 bags full sir". Rehearsed answers and fielded interviews with casual aplomb, 24/7. |

But they didn't always make the big bucks. They are coached on what to say all through their careers. In the AHL, ECHL, etc, where they are making practically nothing, they are still being told what to say. I say eff that.
I wouldn't say I'd be a Sean Avery, but I'd certainly have a voice. Maybe I'd be a Roenick, with a bit more sarcasm, if that is even possible. |

That's true.....but the possibility of such a payoff is so alluring, anyone will do whatever it takes to reach it. Not just for the money, but to play the best game in the world at the elite level.
How else do you think that slimeball Graham James preyed on his players for 20 years without anyone speaking up about it? He held the key to their hockey future, and they were willing to keep quiet if it meant getting closer to the NHL. But remember: Neither Roenick nor Hull acted this way in Junior or their rookie seasons. They only grew brass ones when they knew they were proven all-stars and safeguarded from being blacklisted by the league. And oh yeah, were already financially secure. |

If I were Avery, I'd publicly offer to stop any verbal abuse if I could have the opportunity to beat the life out of Campbell and anyone else of equal stature, just to put things in perspective.
So he speaks out on not liking something. Let him. The NHL is more powerful the more it gives an impression of levying the fine, and just ignoring comments about it, is it not? Star Warish, "Galactic Empire" sort of feel. If players whine, reply with the whopping line of............ "It was diving. We dealt with it." |
