DVD Review: The Ultimate Gretzky
Ultimate journey through hockey's greatest player is ultimately unfulfilling
Imagine a baseball player hitting 92 homeruns in a single season (and 894 in his career). Or a running back rushing for 2857 yards. Imagine, in auto racing, someone placing on the podium in 52 consecutive... |

Great review. I won't check out the DVD, as I have never been a Gretzky fan. Yeah, I know he did great things for the game of hockey, he's just not up my alley.

Okay, to give you a better, more visual example of the enourmity of Gretzky's work, here's a graph I made. People like graphs. And pictures. This is the current (as in as of this writing) top 15 career scoring leaders in the NHL's 90 bazillion year history (the active players noted are all in the twilight of their careers, so they won't move much).
As you can see....no one is anywhere near Gretzky. His stats are so fricken out there that a lot of players coming out of junior these days automatically concede the fact that no matter how good they are--they will NEVER be as good as Gretzky. He has pretty much made the whole challenge of going for records unfair. Who the hell's gonna try to gun for that shit?!? It's fucking ridiculous. Yes, Messier is still playing. At age 42. If he continues playing at his present pace, he should be able to overcome Gretzky in 24.25 years. The ripe old age of 66. If you take away all of Gretzky's goals (which of course he also leads)........he'd still have more points than Messier. 1000 points is considered the golden milestone in hockey. You reach that marker, and you're a shoe-in for the Hall of Fame. It takes an entire career's worth of dedication, resolve, and consistency to get that many points. Gretzky did it in his first 5 seasons, by the time he was 23. Most 23 year olds in the NHL are rookies. |

I'm not saying he wasn't great, no one can be compared to him by the numbers. He's just not my favorite style of player. I prefer bigger, harder hitting, fighting types of players. Cam Neely for example. There are countless others. They'll never catch Wayne's records, but there is more to hockey than records. |
