"The Game", and a loss of work ethic
The hockey game in Canada has become a big thing recently...you wouldn't believe HOW much. A few days ago, the murder trial of a 5 year old girl in Toronto was CANCELLED because of "the game". You can make or lose friends based on what you think of the Leafs. It seems that, up here, we place so...

Recently...did you say recently..LOL Hockey has been a staple of Canada for a long time now. Unless of course you are talking since the beginning of time..then yeah.. Recently sums it up..Playoff season in Canada is when we actually become one as a country, Talk at work..on the golf course.. etc is always about last nights game..or tonights game.. Lots of Canadians hate the leafs..and lots hate Calgary..Vancouver and Edmonton..so what.. thats what makes the game better to watch.. cheering for your team while hating the other guys team.. Thats HOCKEY baby.. and by the way its Maple Leafs.. and Canadian symbol..( hint..look at our Flag) I will also gaurentee you that it doesnt matter what Canadian team is left.. Canadian hockey fans will be cheering for them to beat the US teams ( even though they are made up of a majority of Canadian players Thats one thing that makes Canada shine..Oh and by the way.. if something is on TV you will miss and really really really want to watch it.. hit Record on the VCR ![]() |

Since you people up there take your hockey so seriously to the point that it affects daily commerce and the GDP, what do you do when the Canadian National Curling team is playing and TSN has dedicated a 3 hour block of time to cover it?
... And another thing... Take another look at those NHL rosters in the U.S. cities (and up there, too!)... They're loaded with Russians and their little Eastern-block, bastard cousins!! The Canadians are becoming a dying breed on the ice. That's part of the reason why the NHL really sucks now! We won't need to worry about it next season, though. There won't be a next season! since there won't be a working collective bargaining agreement. |

Well when it comes to next year..I am afraid you are going to be correct Twin....Going to suck with no Draft next year..and me..going through a rebuilding year..lol..
As for curling.. I confess.. I love to watch it..the strategy is chess like..many moves ahead.. and hey..any Bonspiel I have attended ( thats the name for a Curling Tournament ) yeah get to drink while playing.. we aint no fools ![]() Have even seen some hollow curling broom handles that holds a mickey..hehehe. I know about the slow turn to European players....going from memory..its now In the late 1980s, the NHL saw a dramatic increase in European-trained players coming overseas to North America. Before that, Euro stars were few and far between. Of the 126 total prospects that were selected in the 1979 NHL Entry Draft, only six were from Europe (4.8 percent). In 1989, that number grew to 38 of 252 draftees (15.1 percent). The 2000 NHL Entry Draft featured the largest Euro contingent in the history of the Draft, as 123 of the 293 selections were born outside of North America (42 percent). At the 2002 Entry Draft in Toronto, 110 European players were drafted out of the 291 players who were selected (38 percent). Of the 291 choices, 33 were goalies and nine were from Europe (27 percent). OUCH |

First, the murder trial was NOT cancelled- the jurors were given a three hour reprieve to watch the hockey game. Unless you have served in a jury, you have no right to criticize. The murder/dismemberment trial for the parents of the 5 year old Farah Khan was probably one of the most horrendous, stressful and painful experiences those people had to endure. Jurors get paid next to nothing, have to endure long hours away from their families and- as in this case- are often exposed to evils that will haunt them for the rest of their lives. Have you ever had to sit through hours upon hours of tedious and boring testimonies and then be sequestered in a room for hours-to days to come up with a verdict? There was absolutely no doubt regarding the guilt of the father. He confessed to the murder and even showed the police where he buried some of the dismembered parts of his daughter's body. Do you really think taking some time off before rendering the verdict would have changed anything? Quote:
Have you ever invested any emotional connection to something intangible- like a television show, politics, music, celebrities...? I'll bet you have... in fact, with the ubiquity of television/movie/radio we all have. So, why would you question the power of sports over people? To many people of Toronto, the Maple Leafs ARE important. They have a galvanizing effect on our diverse and disparate communities. They represent a distraction from the tedium and hardships of everyday life and above all- give hope and inspiration, as ephemeral as it may be, to millions that just- maybe this year- their sacrifices, hardwork, blood and broken bodies will be rewarded with the distinction of being the best team in their sport. Bosox fans probably know more than anyone else what I am talking about. Are Canadians too hockey obsessed? Maybe. But hockey is a part of our rich heritage with deep roots that span all generations and social strata. You see, our jobs give us the means to live but these intangibles in life like hockey (or whatever you hold dear) give us the reason to live. So before your next attempt at profundity and trying to impress us with your intelligence, I recommend two points: 1) Know what the hell you are talking about 2) Ask yourself, have I considered point 1) Or perhaps you should just follow the advice in your avatar. |

And what criteria do you use to determine who is and isn't a real Canadian? Oh, and one more thing, how are the Canucks doing in the playoffs? Oh yeah, I remember now, they got their sissy asses kicked by the Flames. Have a nice day, |

Oh. It looks like I've struck a nerve. See, Magicthighs, the difference between me and you is I don't particularly care if my hockey team wins or loses. Sure, I'd like them to win, but it's not the end of the world if they don't. Either way, my life does not change one bit. I still have to go to work in the morning. I still have bills to pay. I still have a life to live.
And living in Vancouver--aka the greatest habitable piece of land in Canada--there are better things to do than get caught up in the antics of professional athletes. Maybe you don't in that toxic waste dump you call a city, but why is that my fault? And yes, I'm well aware that Toronto is the Centre of Canada, in much the same way that a sphincter is the centre of an asshole. It gets smellier the closer you get to TO, too. As for Leafs fans: you know, you guys wouldn't be so pathetic if you didn't worship your team to such ridiculous extremes. Doing things in moderation is healthy. Doing this irrational self-righteous shit just makes you look like a tool. Makes you more than a tool, in fact. It makes you many tools welded together to make some sort of super tool. With that said, here's a really big number that the rest of Canada laughs habitually at: 37! ...soon to be 38.... |
