2006 NBA Playoffs
As I've sat and watched the current NBA Playoffs, most notably the Lakers and Clippers series, several things have caught my attention. To begin with,it's been amazing how easily the Clippers have manhandled the Nuggets in their series. I remember only a year or so ago,all the hoopla that was being spewed by the Nugget fans about how great they were going to be after drafting Melo, acquiring Camby,Martin and Miller. As I said back then, the Nuggets would still never win a dam thing and sure enough, they've become one of,if not the worst and most disfunctional team in the NBA,not to mention the playoffs.
As for recent surgence of the Lakers, there should now be no doubt that Phil Jackson is without a doubt,a great coach based on what he had to work with in terms of team talent and experience. Aside from one superstar(Kobe) and one potential great player(Odom),he had a mixed bag of players with which to mold into a team. Phil's most brilliant move of the season came when he inserted Luke Walton into the Lakers starting lineup. With the least to work with in terms of team talent of any playoff coach,he is the real NBA coach of the year. Finally, these playoffs have if nothing else, have proven that what you did during the regular season doesn't really mean shit and the playoffs are a different breed of beast as the players always make a point of stating. That brings me to the NBA MVP award, how in the hell can you be considered the League MVP when you can't even lead your team out of the first round of the playoffs. The MVP voting is a farce and all you have to do is look at the Lakers/Suns series to see who is the real NBA MVP and it sure as hell isn't Steve Nash, the real NBA MVP wears Laker purple and gold with the number 8 on his back. |

I'm going to disagree with ya about Phil Jackson being coach of the year. He's done a fantastic job in the postseason, but come on... the Lakers were making the playoffs, you can't have a superstar and not make it unless something is horribly wrong.
Kobe shoulda been MVP, or at least LeBron, they probably got more 1st place votes but Nash got all the 2nds and snuck in. I can't wait until they release the voting. What about the Bulls series though. Who had the Bulls being a big man away from being the new Detriot/San Antonio? They are all young, and they are all just right there on the cusp getting experience and confidence in this series, that they could be up 3-1 right now, or have swept Miami if Wade didnt go insane the 4th quarter in game 2. I just want that Lakers-Clippers series to happen, and let the Clippers beat them in 7, because THAT would be fantastic. Mainly because I hate the Lakers but I would like to see the Clippers not suck. What about San Antonio and Sacremento's series. I can't believe its tied right now. Kevin Martin has become the guy that goes from nobody to millionaire from the postseason. The Pacers-Nets series is neck and neck. The Grizz need a win just so they get one. The Bucks probably don't have a shot unless Redd drops 40 or more again, and I don't think he has it in him again. Damn good playoffs so far, Round 2 should be 4 fantastic series. |

I agree with you that all the series have been great to watch except for the Nuggets/Clippers series, which was a pathetic showing by the Nuggets. I still think that Phil should have been coach of the year, just because you have a superstar doesn't mean that you're going to automatically make the playoffs.MJ was a superstar but he never won a thing until they put good players around him and the Bulls got a good coach(Phil Jackson).Anytime you as a coach have to work with and mold a team from a group of cast offs from other teams (Mihm,Kwame and Smush) along with a bench made up of NBA life time reserves, teach them how to run the triangle offense and by seasons end and into playoffs, having them play as good as any team in the playoffs. If that doesn't qualify you as NBA coach of the year, then nothing does.

I've really enjoyed the playoffs so far. Been so many great games, and the second round is looking like those good games will continue.
On a sidenote I think TNT has done a great job covering the games. I love the studio crew and the play by play has been decent. I even enjoy their theme song for the playoffs. Sadly they never play the whole thing, but I just got it from this new thing called Napster Links. The song is "Remember the Name" by Ford Minor. Just search and you can find it. |

What happened to Ernie Johnson on TNT? Looks like one side of his face was swollen?

According to insidehoops.com in Feb 06... "'Two and a half years ago, in August of 2003, I was diagnosed with "follicular" Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. This is a low-grade and treatable cancer--not as aggressive as some other forms. The approach that my oncologist recommended was what is called "watchful waiting"--that is, monitoring my condition with checkups every 4 months with the option to begin treatment if and when I began showing symptoms of illness. Through all this time I have had no symptoms...have felt great... and still do to this day. The only reason I'm bringing my condition to your attention now is because the swelling of a lymph node near my left ear has become noticeable to viewers of TNT and there have been questions asked. My plan is to work the rest of the NBA season and playoffs, go to the beach with my wife, Cheryl, and our 4 kids, and start a treatment regimen in late June, which will likely include chemotherapy. And then I'll go back to work.'" |
