University President Betsy Hoffman reinstated Gary Barnett as the head coach of the University of Colorado football team this week. She also announced that Athletic Director Dick Tharp will keep his job too. Hoffman went on to say there would be closer ties between the athletic department and the...

The best thing to do here is clean house from the top down. Fire everyone and bring in a new staff and let them run the team. Also, put the program on probabtion. If the fuck up, they can't play - plain and simple.

A lot of people here think that's what should be done. The only problem is, as usual, money. The state of Colorado is having a terrible budget crisis, and higher education spending has been cut a good deal in recent years (thank you, Governor Owens). College football brings in a lot of money to CU, as football does all across the country. Hoffman and Bynny are reluctant to clean house because of this reason.
If Barnett and Tharp and just about everyone else in between them were to be fired, that would leave only three months to get everything organized in time for the season. This could be a disaster for CU. Season ticket sales would most likely drop drastically, and the stadium might not even fill up on game days. The less money there is coming into the program, then less money there is to help the team and reorganize the program. That's something that, at this point, the Univeristy of Colorado could not afford to do. On the other hand, I think Barnett and Tharp will be shown the door within three years unless the football program turns around dramatically - something like winning a couple Big XII Championships. Once Barnett's contract is up, his time at CU will probably be over as well. Hopefully by that time the program will have straightened out and it won't be a problem to have the athletic department reshuffled. |

It's a mess, that's for sure. It'll probably take a couple years for this all to settle down and be fully resolved.

Ny state is the same way, but that's our own fault. Our budget has been late fro the last 20 or so years. The state funding is FUBAR'ed. The collegee are starting to feel the strain as well.

I personally blame Governor Bill Owens for making this mess worse. Yes, there were budget issues before he came to power in 1998, but he's been cutting away at higher education for the past six years and large universities like CU and CSU are really beginning to feel the pressure.
Unfortunately, this mess will only get worse before it comes close to getting any better. |

It always gets worse before better. Our problem has been poor planning by the state. Of course 9-11 didn't help either.

Yeah, I would have guessed that part. Hopefully these continued budget cuts won't cripple the universities in this state, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

This is my first actual story, by the way. I was originally going to put this in the College Sports forum, but it just kept getting longer and longer and longer.
In any case, there's still more of this whole investigation in the news around these parts, so I'll put more in here later if it's Rantworthy. |
