Unbreakable, Part 1
Everyone is fascinated by the records in professional sports because they represent a lifetime of work and sacrifice to become the very best there is, the king of the mountain, the all-time leader.
Major League Baseball sports more than 120 years of history, and in that time many records have... Full Article Last edited by jtg33; June 14th, 2004 at 03:44 AM. |

Hey I think that you are correct on the CY Young records and but the others are breakable, it will happen, maybe not in my life time but they will be broken
on a side note, when you submit news, do it from the home page and just use regular text. I had to edit your story and so it would show correctly |

Sorry about that. I typed this story up in Microsoft Word because I wanted it to be saved if my computer crapped out on me, which it did a couple times.
Other records like the single-season losses are breakable. It can be done, but no manager in his right mind would keep a pitcher on their staff that was approaching that mark. While it's very possible it could happen, the way modern teams are run it's highly unlikely anyone will ever get much more than 20 (like Mike Maroth did for Detroit last year or a couple years ago or something). I said Nolan Ryan's 7 no-hitters record is unbreakable because just doing one takes such overpowering ability. I suppose you're right, someone could come along and get close to it, but I don't know if it could be equaled. Same for Ryan's strikeouts record. He's so incredibly far ahead of even Roger Clemens that it would take an incredibly powerful pitcher who pitched consistently for over 20 years to come close. There's some more breakable records in the batting categories. I'll put that one up in a little while. |

How about Orel Hershiser 59 consecutive scoreless innings pitched for the Dodgers in 1988?

That's a good one. I knew he had that but I couldn't find the specific numbers. That one could be reached and broken, but it would have to be a good pitcher on an amazing hot streak - or just an incredibly lucky pitcher on a lucky streak. Thanks for reminding me of that one.

Since I find Baseball waaaaayyy to boring ( but alas..I can watch golf..so you figure it out..lol) I will ask all you knowledgable people one question..
A no hitter does not mean that no one got a hit..just no one got on base.. is that correct ? If 27 guys all popped up and where all out.. is that still a no hitter ?? So then I guess to say the bases are loaded..it means they are all on the back of someones truck ![]() |

A perfect game is when not a single person gets on base - 27 up, 27 down. If they all popped out it'd still be a no hitter, but it'd also be a perfect game - a far rarer feat. |

I think Nolan Ryan's strikeout total can be beat, but that pitcher will have to pitch until they are 45. There are a lot of strikeout pitchers out there, but they will have to play for a lot of years. The others will never be broken. I don't think Pete Rose's career hits will ever be broken. I doubt anyone breaks 4,000 again. Tony Gwynn barely got 3,100 hits. He was still over 1,000 hits away from Rose.

That's what makes Nolan Ryan's record so difficult. I too believe it could be broken, but pitchers these days don't seem to be the kind of dominant, long-lasting pitchers that are needed to break a record like this. I think people can definately come close, but I don't know if anyone will ever break it.

Part 2 will be ready in a couple days. This one has a focus on hitting records, many of which are actually breakable. Only a few will forever remain out of reach.
