Since when do ghosts have shifts?

Penguins off-season
Two good signings so far for the Penguins so far in the Ray Shero era. Defenseman Mark Eaton should bring some stability to the rear guard. Also Jarkko Ruutu adds some toughness to the lineup. Hopefully Ruutu won't get the same affliction that most tough guys get when coming to Pittsburgh,...

Well this is certainly good news for the future of the team!
It appears the only thing preventing Evgeni Malkin from becoming a member of the Penguins is a piece of paper on the NHL's desk. Although the league still hasn't received documentation that a transfer agreement with the Russian Ice Hockey Federation is official, Malkin's Russian coach, Dave King, said Thursday that training camp opens July 14, and he isn't expecting the center to be there. "The roster I have doesn't show him attending our camp," said King, the former Canadian national team and NHL coach who worked behind the bench for Metallurg Magnitogorsk last season. "I'd love to have him, but I don't think we're going to have him." http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pitt.../s_460947.html |

Hooray! Malkin should be a fantastic addition. I am going to be interested to see if Jordan Staal makes the squad or is returned to his junior team.

DAMN... you poor bastards can't buy a break...
According to a release on the Metallurg Magnitogorsk website, Russian centre Evgeni Malkin has signed a new contract and will play in Russia for the 2006-2007 season. Widely regarded as the top prospect outside the NHL, Malkin was drafted second overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2004. The 20 year-old did have a contract with Magnitogorsk that ran through 2008, but that has reportedly been replaced by this new one-year deal, after which Malkin will become a free agent and presumably able to sign with the Penguins. I am fast approaching the point where he should make up his effing mind. It appears he will be staying at Magnitogorsk, fine. But I wish his agent would stop playing both sides of the effing fence. Just last Friday his agent was quoted in the Pittsburgh papers that he expected Malkin to be in Pittsburgh this season. Malkin is fast becoming the Cuntley Cole of the Penguins.
I do have to wonder though is the first sign of the Russian Super League actually outbidding the NHL for a player? I do recall pointing out that this may start to happen with the salary cap in place in the NHL, but then our good friend Ishie said I was a dope. I just think he, meaning Ishie, does nothing but smoke dope so there you go.

does this make him a UFA for next season? or has it only been two years since his draft.....

Gunny do you know for sure this is Malkins doing? Russia still never signed the transfer agreement with the USA. Malkin still had 2 years left on his Russian contract, and they let him reduce it to one year remaining. Without a transfer deal in place he has to do what the Russian organization has him under contract for.
Nick, he would never be a UFA... but this is only his 2nd year. If the Pens can't get him signed by next season he would then re-enter the draft. He's not old enough, nor would he have the NHL games played to qualify as a UFA. |

If Malkin wanted to come over he could, there is a Russian Labor law that says if you give a written 2 weeks notice to leave your job then the contract is null and void. How else do think Ovechkin got over here.
Whether or not Malkin comes over here there is still the question that I think will get bigger and bigger in the next few years. Will the Russian Super League actually become more attractive financially for Euro based players? I think the Malkin situation is the start of this. NHL rookies have a rookie maximum salary, nothing like that in the Russian Super League.

Oh, thanks for educating my ass Gunny!
I was under the impression he could only go if the Russians allowed him and the Pens paid the big transfer fee. Now i'm more confused than ever with my newfound knowledge... why wouldn't he come over here to play? Sure its possible that Russia is paying him more than what the NHL rookie max is, but he's got to see the bigger picture. Believe me, Russia isn't paying what the NHL does to even their mid level players. |
