The Jester's Quart: A Penalty Kick in the Pants
What a tiresome debate we've had in the aftermath of the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Somehow, an entire tournament of great soccer has been encapsulated into a few harsh words, a head to the sternum, and a seemingly endless back-and-forth about it. Obviously you can't spell Zidane without Zzzzzzz...

that corner kick idea is dumber than pk's....i'm not a proponent of the pk's...but its not as easy as one might perceive it to be...i'd be happy to see anyone here take 10 pk's on a professional goalie and score 6 times..heck even 4 times...on top of that all...you have roughly 80k in the stands and a billion people watching all over the world staring at you while take this pk....just a little bit of pressure...i personally think they should play until someone scores(allowing for more substitutions in overtime) but to call it the dumbest idea in sports...i think your being a little dramatic

What is this picture? A new game where NFL players use, on the field, the weapons they usually keep concealed in their cars and waistbands for use when they drive through McDonalds parking lots?

Although I am not enamored with the idea of determining the winner of a match on penalty kicks, I do understand the need for it. Keep in mind in soccer each team is only allowed 3 substitutions in the entire game. So after 2 hours of action each team would have 8 players that have been out there the entire time, no line changes, no time outs, no TV breaks. Given that to continue to play would probably not only only see neither team score again but could physically damage some especially when the temperatures are high.
So the dilemma is how to determine a winner. In the old days, the match would be drawn after 120 minutes and would then be replayed at a later date. That is not an option in today's world because of the already tightly packed schedule for these players. So the only option available is PKs, I may not think it's the best way but I can live with it and the tension of the PK with so much riding on it is tremendous. Plus I got to laugh at David Trezeguet when he hit the bar with his PK, given that I watched the game in a room full of French supporters made it all the better when I let out a big BWAHAHAHAHA when the dear David missed. So that was fun. |

My only problem with PK's deciding a game is that they are too easy to score. I know Sig says its harder than I think... but how many missed shots were there in the WC final?? Point proven. You have 120 minutes of a game where its very hard to score goals, but then decide the game on something that is easy to score.
BUT, i understand why they do it. Two teams could play to a 0-0 tie for two days straight if you let them. Just because i don't like it, doesn't mean there is a better option. I like the idea of corner kicks actually. They are hard to score on and it involves the offense, defense and the goalie... rather than just a kicker and a goalie. |
