Unbreakable, Part 2

Last time, I took a look at some of the most famous (and infamous) pitching records. Now, it’s time to look at the hitting records. Unlike many of the pitching records, a good deal of these records can be broken, perhaps even within the next few years. Perhaps this can be attributed to the way the...

Yet another record Bonds holds that he is most likely to break. Hell, he might break it this year. Isn’t that right, Mike?
Aint that the fricken truth!!

Good article(s) man!! I dont agree on the 56 hits by Dimaggio though, that will be broken some season coming up soon!! It is just a matter of time

As far as the others, every record is made to be broken, it always is

I agree with DiMaggio's 56, but it'll be very difficult to do. Whoever does it will be a very good, very lucky hitter. It is, however, just a matter of time, as you said.

Stuff like Rose's hit records and single-season batting average won't, in my opinion, be broken because they're just such incredibly huge numbers. I don't think any player right now can break them.

Of course. It'll just take a very special player to break some of them.

Another one you might not want to have, but it’s not really a negative record either. Barry Bonds is right behind Williams with 2070 walks (through 2003). It’s only a matter of time until Bonds surpasses Williams and claims the record for himself – much to the displeasure of people like Mike.
An update on this record: Barry Bonds has broken it. He recorded the 2191st base-on-balls of his career today when he was walked for the second time in San Franssico's game against Oakland.

Once again, Bonds now has the all-time record for walks in a career with 2191 and counting!

Time for an update on this thread. A few months ago, I posted the following under the "Likely to Fall" catgory:

This is one several players could break, and have almost broken. Jose Hernandez came the closest, striking out 188 times in 2002. Fans were cheering for him to break the record, but the Brewers’ manager held him out of games at the end of the year to prevent him from doing so – for his sake, I guess. Jim Thome could also break this record, as he struck out 185 times in 2001, and Sammy Sosa could break it sometime as well. Sosa struck out 174 times in 1997, and has several places in the single-season top 30 all-time.
Well, this record has been broken. Adam Dunn of the Cincinnati Reds has been fanned 190 times so far this season. Dunn tied and set the record on Thursday against the Chicago Cubs.

Another record, one I deemed less likely to fall, has just been tied moments ago:

Sisler set this record playing with the St. Louis Browns (now the Orioles), and it still stands as the highest single-season total in major league history. I don’t think this record will be broken. Good hitters get to 100 hits very frequently. Some great hitters get to – or very close to - 200 hits. The thing is, 200 hits is an incredibly difficult total to reach. Virtually no one has the ability to do that these days, so it is just about untouchable.
It came in the first inning of a game between Texas and Seattle, with Ichiro Suzuki at the plate. A soft liner off his bat went over the third baseman's glove and into shallow left field, giving Ichiro the tie with Sisler at 257 hits in a single season, among chants of "I-chi-ro! I-chi-ro!" from the crowd. He still has almost three full games to break a record that has stood for 84 years.

And it's official! In the bottom of the third inning, Ichiro Suzuki got his second single of the game, breaking George Sisler's 84-year-old record of 257 hits in a single season. Ichiro is the new single-season hits king. 258 hits is now the record, and that total will surely grow over the rest of this weekend.
