NCAA FOOTBALL COACHING BIAS?
After participating in a lively rant with my peers here at sportsrant concerning the reason for Ty Willinghams sudden dismissal from the beloved(or reviled) Notre Dame I decided to do a little research on who exactly is coaching our big time college football teams. I found the going very tedious...

I think what you wrote about is a valid problem, but things are getting better. As more minority coaches fill Offensive Coordinator and Definsive Coordinator positions, the problem will fix itself to a degree. At the same time the NCAA is an old boys network, especially in the South where I live. Old rich white guys are the big money boosters and they have alot of say over who gets hired as a head coach.

The Old Boys Network is exactly how the Globe article described it. I have tried to have this conversation with more than a few people over the last few days and most would rather not talk about it. Guess you really can't blame them there. To me this is a real issue because it speaks of big programs not hiring the "best" available person to coach. Not to mention the deeper issue of institutional bias.

Very good read there Bil, I just don't know enough about college sports to have a valid opinion. Although I would think that given the number of former football players that are African American there does seem to be some kind of disparity in the head coaching ranks.

It confuses me when I try to figure out the why of this. It has to go beyong this "old boy" thing. It seems that the norm in all sports when it comes to coaching/managing is to use someone who has already done it whether or not they have been successful. There are multiple retreads in these positions throughout all the major professional and college sports. Some have been recycled and done well but many have always been average at best. The examples are to numerous to list.

How stable is a head coaching job in college football? If it is a job with low turn over maybe that contributres to this scenario? I dunno I am just reaching for possibilities.

Joe Paterno been around for a thousand years. If you win you are secure. There is not a lot of turnover with the big programs.
