Hockey Outsiders - Season Preview
Some of this stuff is just pure gold!
1. New Jersey Devils The only team operating on a 55 million dollar cap goes into the season as one of the division’s contenders again after winning the Atlantic in the last game of 05-06. Uncle Lou has a lot of cleaning to do in order to get under the... Full Article

5. The Carolina Hurricanes
Can you say championship hangover. This team lost last years leading scorer Matt Cullen and Norris trophy winner Aaron Ward to the New York Rangers via free agency. Their GM Jim Rutherford has been completely silent this off season also, being content to ice the leftovers from last year’s team in a hope to rekindle the championship run. Sorry Jim, it’s not going to happen. It’s time for this team to rebuild. Look for them to move cagy veteran Eric Staal and journeyman winger Erik Cole by the trade deadline. Word is they might try to trade the 2 players in a package deal to the LA Kings for their stud defensive prospect Jack Johnson. Here’s hoping they do, because they desperately need the help.

"The Predators by comparison get us all worked into thinking they are dirty, nasty sluts (we mean that in a totally good way), only to leave us unsatisfied."

2. Philadelphia Flyers
Even with a healthy Peter Forsberg, the Flyers go into the 06-07 campaign with more questions than Bush had for his re-election bid. Is the defense mobile enough? Do they have enough secondary scoring? Is Niittyymmaakkii’s torn labrum going to effect his play? Is Hitchcock going to find his mustache? Will they be ‘team’ tough enough? The Flyers have always done well in the regular season, but when the real games start is when this team has the most trouble. They appear to have solidified the 2nd line by acquiring Kyle Calder from Chicago for Michal Handzus, but the question will remain throughout the year on whether Clarke did enough to secure the defense. 3. New York Rangers Is it really possible that Glen Sather took this offseason to gather the “necessary” parts for a possible cup run? Is it really possible that Brendan Shannahan scored more goals than he is old last season in Detroit? I will go on record to say that if the Rangers played every minute of every game on the powerplay, they would win the Cup. The Rangers will make the playoffs, but I have a feeling there’s going to be a letdown in New York, just ask Larry Brooks. |

I didn't find them to be the most humorous. I like this one too... (poor Crapitals)1. The Washington Capitols Coming off a breakout season for last year’s rookie of the year award winner, the Capitols are poised to take the Southeast division by storm. With an almost impenetrable defense, led by John Erskine, the Capitols will have no problem shutting down opponents. Olaf Kolzig will take his sub 2 GAA into this season behind this incredible defense and goals will be hard for opponents to come by. Alexander Ovechkin’s dominating skill level could make him the first player to win the Calder trophy two years in a row, a feat never done before, not even by Gretzky… who missed winning it his second year by 6 votes. On paper they are sure fire Cup contenders, but as we all know, that’s why we play the season. Look for this team to be the number 1 or 2 seed out of the East this year.
