Carling Cup 2006-07
This Tuesday and Wednesday sees the third round of the Carling Cup being played. This competition originally known as the League Cup is only open to those clubs either in the Premier League, the Coca-Cola Championship, League 1 and League 2. Of course over the years this Cup has gone through many names such as the Milk Cup, the Littlewoods Challenge Cup and perhaps my favorite the Worthington Cup which gave birth to the nickname the Worthless Cup.
While not entirely worthless, because winning does qualify the winner into the UEFA Cup for next season, it is a competition where some of the bigger clubs run out the youth in the squad to gain some valuable first team experience. Something to watch for to see who may be the up and comers in the bigger clubs. Anyhoo, given all that here are the third round matches; Tuesday, 24 October 2006 Chesterfield (League 1) v West Ham United (EPL) Everton (EPL) v Luton Town (Championship) Leeds United (Championship) v Southend (Championship) Leicester City (Championship) v Aston Villa (EPL) Notts County (League 2) v Southampton (Championship) Port Vale (League 1) v Norwich City (Championship) Sheffield United (EPL) v Birmingham City (Championship) Watford (EPL) v Hull (Championship) West Bromwich Albion (Championship) v Arsenal (EPL) Wycombe Wanderers (League 2) v Doncaster (League 1) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Wednesday, 25 October 2006 Blackburn Rovers (EPL) v Chelscum (EPL) Charlton Athletic (EPL) v Bolton Wanderers (EPL) Crewe Alexandra (League 1) v Manchester United (EPL) Liverpool (EPL) v Reading (EPL) Milton Keynes Dons (League 2) v sp*rs (EPL) Newcastle United (EPL) v Portsmouth (EPL) And just to give some history here is the list of past winners of the oft-named trophy with 3 handles; 1961 – Aston Villa 1962 – Norwich City 1963 – Birmingham City 1964 – Leicester City 1965 – Chelscum 1966 – West Bromwich Albion 1967 – Queens Park Rangers 1968 – Leeds United 1969 – Swindon Town 1970 – Manchester City 1971 – sp*rs 1972 – Stoke City 1973 – sp*rs 1974 – Wolves 1975 – Aston Villa 1976 – Manchester City 1977 – Aston Villa 1978 – Nottingham Forest 1979 – Nottingham Forest 1980 – Wolves 1981 – Liverpool 1982 – Liverpool 1983 – Liverpool 1984 – Liverpool 1985 – Norwich City 1986 – Oxford United 1987 – Arsenal 1988 – Luton Town 1989 – Nottingham Forest 1990 – Nottingham Forest 1991 – Sheffield Wednesday 1992 – Manchester United 1993 – Arsenal 1994 – Aston Villa 1995 – Liverpool 1996 – Aston Villa 1997 – Leicester City 1998 – Chelscum 1999 – sp*rs 2000 – Leicester City 2001 – Liverpool 2002 – Blackburn Rovers 2003 – Liverpool 2004 – Middlesbrough 2005 – Chelscum 2006 – Manchester United |

Yeah I dunno why they don't show the Carling Cup, the rights must be too expensive, although I can't imagine why.
As far as betting on this one, I dunno Jay. Like I said this is where big clubs like Manchester United and Arsenal usually throw out the youth and reserves at this stage in the competition. So upsets do happen even when facing lower level talent. Milton Keynes Dons, we once knew you as Wimbledon FC, ah how the mighty have fallen, hope they smack around sp*rs! |
