Passer Ratings

Who the hell came up with this and thought, seems easy enough. Someone has too big a love for math.

Passer rating - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

NFL and CFL

The passer rating is determined by four statistics, each of which are computed as a number between zero and 2.375. The benchmarks for these statistics are based on historical averages. If any of the components are less than zero, they are reckoned as zero; if any are over 2.375, they are reckoned as 2.375.
  • The completion percentage rating is calculated as
  • The rating for average yards per attempt is calculated as
  • The rating for touchdowns per attempt is calculated as
  • The rating for interceptions per attempt is calculated as
The four results are then added, divided by 6, and multiplied by 100. Since each of these numbers is at most 2.375, the maximum passer rating is
.

The theory makes sense sure, the nerd who came up with the formula and tested and tested till he got it just right, is insane.

I've never been a fan of passer ratings. What does TD's per attempt have to do with how good or bad of a game or season you had? What if you don't throw the ball much but you manage the game great? What if you throw a ton, but mostly short passes? Which would also throw off the interception "value" as well.

And no, i don't have a better way to do it... i just don't see why we need a passer rating. Where is the RB rating and Linebacker rating?

I guess the thinking is the QB is the true leader of the team and with his "rating" so goes the W's and L's. Maybe I'll look up some numbers to see low QB ratings consistantly winning or losing games and if there is any correlation.

Just be glad we don't give you a poster rating here

Oh i'm sure it goes hand and hand with winning. But so does comp. % and Td to Interception ratio. Basically you can look at a QB's stats and tell who the winners and losers are.

Believe me Rusty, I am, i am.

So if they go hand in hand why don't you like them? I would think it shows you who is winning and losing but I guess you really shouldn't base a QB's career on the rating? Then again if it is low are they winning enough games to reflect a good career with a bad passer rating. Then once again the team as a whole contributes to such wins and losses. Ugh I think i confused myself.

lol, yeah you just confused me! David Carr has the 6th highest passer rating. And Jake Plummer is dead last out of all starters.

Me personally not liking them does mean the ratings are good. I just don't see a need for them. For example... if you are looking at QB's "years in review", are you looking at their overall stats to see how the year went or the passer rating?

Passer ratings don't take into consideration fumbles the player has, or how many times he held on to the ball and gets sacked. Its actually better for your rating to take a 10 yard sack on 1st down than it is to throw the ball away.

Well personally I rate a passer on their career and full stats as a whole. I guess its just one of those stats that tells a lot but not the whole story, like you pointed out.
