Red Sox get Matsuzaka Bid.
For between $38 and $45 million!
Are they NUTS? Plus they will have to pay at least $10 mil a year to him! They could probably get Zito, Soriano AND Schmidt for that $55mil. |

This is not a good move on the surface. This guy is an unknown commodity. Theo is the man they say, this move alone could prove or disprove that. No doubt this will keep the sox on the top the mast in the Boston papers for a few days.

not a good move on the surface? Then were is it a good move? For that kind of "up front money", they are going to have to sign him to a long term deal. Say 5 to 7 years at $8 to $10 mil a year? You know what this dude would have to do for those years to make this a smart move?
However, looking ahead... i wouldn't be suprised if he doesn't sign with Boston. Whoever won the bid has to now negotiate a contract with him. If they can't reach a deal, Matsuzaka goes back to Japan for the 2007 season. What if the Sox just outbid the Yanks so they didn't get him? They can offer Matsuzaka a $1 mil a year for 10 years deal... since he won't take that, the Sox get their money back and the Yanks don't get him. |

If he signs with them and then wins 100 games in five years it is a good move. I don't like it and see this as a desperate move by a GM who is not as smart as he thinks he is.
If he wins the 100 in five forget what I just said. |

ummmm... this is retarded. you pay all this money for a guy whose agent is scott boras. boras only wants him to sign a three year deal so that he can get big free agent money after the 2010 season. the major red flag is that in japan they only pitch once a week. they do not follow a 5 man rotation. he might not be able to hold up. with that said peter gammons said this guy is the real deal. thats almost good enough for me.

I'm sure this guy is the real deal. He looked amazing in the World Championships (or whatever they called it). But really, how good does this guy have to be to make up for the money you are throwing away on him?
And what if you are right, and they can only get a 3 year deal with him? What do they do if the Yankees then overpay for him then? I just can't see how the reward outweighs the risks here. |

Boras is looking for a 5 year, ten mil a season deal. I think that it is stupid spending this much cash just to be able to negotiate with the guy. However if we are able to sign him, then they just really are looking for a middle infielder, a right fielder and thenworry about the bullpen. We are definitely going to be over 200 mil this season....

lol, Nick, i can see you didn't read the article before posting. The Tigers aren't even one of the teams interested. However, if Boston does trade him... its just proof they did what they could to keep the yankees from getting him. Not a bad move.
