Coach steps down after 5th OUI; Still teaching physical education at Weymouth High

WEYMOUTH - The coach of the girls basketball team at Weymouth High School has resigned after his fifth drunken-driving arrest.

Stephen Shoff, 56, of 35 Signal Hill Road, Marshfield, was arrested Nov. 18 by a State Police trooper who said he saw him weaving on Route 3 in Hanover.

His driver’s license was suspended for life because he is a repeat offender who refused to take a blood-alcohol test.

Shoff, a physical education teacher who also coaches boys soccer at the high school, is free on $1,000 bail.

He will keep his teaching job but will not be coaching girls basketball when the season starts Friday.

It is unclear whether he will lose his job as soccer coach.

In 17 years under Shoff, the Weymouth boys soccer team has won three Division 1 state championships and has made the semifinals of the state tournament 15 straight years.

5 DUI's?!?!?! Yeah, this is a guy i would want teaching my kids. I don't care if its just Phys ed... i don't want him having anything to do with developing my kids. Obviously he has a big problem if he didn't realize he shouldn't drive when he drinks after the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th arrests. I bet he gets another one.

How is it UNCLEAR if he will lose his job as soccer coach? He would be fired from McDonalds at this point.

This guy should not be coaching kids or teaching them. It is pretty easy to fire a coach but his position as a teacher has some protection built in by the his union.

Here in Salem in the paper this morning we have a high school teacher who got his third Wednesday night after he drove his 1993 jeep into a tree. The cops found him sleeping across the bucket seats. He blew a .28(3 times the legal limit here). He teaches math, and volunteers as a coach on the math team, baseball team and basketball team(he scouts the opposing teams). His first was in 1983 and his second in 1991.

I just happen to know this guy personally. He is a great guy sober but a horrible, loud, beligerent drunk. Part of me says give him a break, but you know what, fuck that. When do you learn your lesson, when is it time to grow up. It sucks but it is what it is. He is looking at a minimum of 150 days in jail and 10 year loss of license. Drop the hammer.

Jay = VERY against drinking and driving. I'm a big baby when it comes to that... i can't have more than 2 beers if i'm going to drive a car. It's not happening to me.

Good point Bil, but would the teachers union risk the REALLY REALLY bad publicity of standing up for a 5 time offender. When its time to renogiate teachers contracts the first thing I would do as a district is bring that up to get the public against the union. I am pro-union, but this scumbag needs to go clean toilets or something and ride a bike to work. How is he not in jail?
