Diversity Needed At Georgia Tech
As a Georgia Tech two time graduate, I am interested in sports, race and racism as social issues. I have enjoyed basketball since high school in East Point, Georgia. I was not good enough to make my high school team, and I can only imagine how great it must be to play at the Division I level on a team like Georgia Tech. I can remember Tech with Roger Kaiser vs. Kentucky with Cotton Nash like it was yesterday, not 50 years as it has been.
I am a Georgia Tech fan, but I am not a fan like the ones on forums, I do not follow Tech teams as closely as most of the folks here do. Tech’s current basketball team is super, from all the players to the coaches. However, it seems to me that something is missing. When I raised this issue several months, I was called every name but my own, and culminated with racist. Nothing could be further from the truth. Folks on forums indicated that it was just a fact of life that basically all of Tech’s players were black. However white guys like to play basketball also, and I know there are many that would love to play for Tech. Folks on these forums also educated me to the would be fact that ALL the good players were black, and that it was IMPOSSIBLE to recruit white players. Now that the season is here, I see that they were correct. It is impossible for Tech to recruit them, the white guys play for Tech’s opponents. The ones that are diverse, and also busy kicking Tech’s ass. It has not been too many years since John Thompson only recruited black players to Georgetown University, and sure enough the team was all black. Funny how that works. Hope that is not happening at Tech. If you think that it is an accident that basically all of the Tech basketball team is the same race, then you flunked probability and logic. Tech and our society would be a better with Diversity, white guys getting to know and like and dislike black guys, and finding how many things they have in common. Maybe it would help the team play as a team, and not 5 guys as they do now. It is obvious that Tech does not believe in Diversity or have any commitment to Diversity, that is too bad – it hurts ALL of us. When I attended Tech in the late 60’s the team was all one race (white), and racist, that was just the way our society was – sick. That condition was very wrong. Now the team is basically one race (black) again, and that is also wrong. Hope Tech has not slipped back into racism. It is not hard to do, our society was for hundreds of years. There is NO relationship between race, and intelligence or athletic ability. Not ALL black guys are great basketball players and white guys can jump. To suggest otherwise is RACIST. Those are my comments. If can express yourself without using profanity, I would enjoy your comments. If not, have a nice day at the University of Georgia. If you're really interested in doing something about racism,I would suggest working on a solution not attacking a problem and stirring the pot. What you are doing is only creating more strife. The solution is nothing new. It's the message preached by Martin Luther King Jr.in the 1960's.We are all children of God,one creation made in His image.King's dream is that people should be judged by the content of their character and not the color of their skin.
Our only hope for a solution is to understand and follow the teaching of MLK Jr and his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We need to preach Love and peace and not hate and division. So,my friend,if you really want the truth,it lies in Christ's teaching. Your approch will only create more hate.Let people see your love for all people living in harmony not for your dislike of a college basketball programs ethnic makeup. |

Not really sure how you got hate out of my call for Diversity? You will have to educate me more on that. I am calling for a solution not "stirring the pot". I am a big fan of the teachings of MLK. And I am a big fan of Jesus, but not in the same sentence. MLK was a human being, with human failings. Thanks for reading and commenting on my Thread. Best Jeff Turner |

is,to say the least, not very well thought out.And then to bring John Thompson into the discusssion? You're a white dude who wants to see white dudes on the GT basketball team.Sorry, but this comes off as more racist and someone with a personal agenda than someone discussing diversity. If you want to see the best players being recruited at GT,then fine. Who are these white stud basketball players that GT let go? Where are your facts? MLK was a Christian. We aren't discussing the Diety of Christ. |

Your logic is a little rusty. You are defending a racist system (John Thompson) and a probably racist system (Georgia Tech), and I am asking for Diversity, but I am the racist. I missed something there? Thank you for the news flash that, "MLK was a Christian", I had always wondered about that with him being a minister and all. Dr. King did not work as hard as he did and give his life for a black section at the lunch counter, he wanted the WHOLE lunch counter, so it could be enjoyed by all of God's children. Segregation and it cousin separation are evil. Best to you "Rocky Top". Jeff Turner |

Maybe Jeff should form a white guys league and they could barnstorm against the NCAA teams in the offseason. The Washington Generals could be the base franchise.

And they could have an African American bus driver to prove their diversity.
