Idealizing Sports Heroes

I look at kids these days and wonder if it is safe for them to idealize sports figures. I remember when I was a kid my hero was Willie McCovey and Darrell Evans of the San Francisco Giants in the late 1970's. When I played football, I used to wish I was Ken Stabler or Fred Biletnikoff....

no kidding

no kidding mike, my heroes were dale murphy, mark grace, ryne sandberg, guys with class and character. playing ball at the park you were always one of those guys, i collected their baseball cards, wrote them letters, the works. now i look at ball players and there aren't a lot of guys that have that effect on me now, which is kind of sad. i always wonder who will be the sports heroes of my kids' generation, and its a little scary. you got pac man jones in strip clubs in vegas with thousands in cash and a security guard gets shot, you got almost the entire bengals team in and out of jail...they could set up a bail bond business on the side there at their stadium...T.O. with all of his crap, barry bonds and the steroid allegations, and the list goes on and one, and its only going to get worse. i wish there were more classy guys that would step up in all the different leagues, guys like peyton manning, the greg maddux's, the jim thome's...have a little class...you're getting paid millions to play games that kids play, why act like jackasses?

Sometimes we all overanaylize things and make ourselves crazy as a result.
Kids are always going to have heros and that is the way it should be. As a parent you can't really obsess to much about it. I know kids who looked up Biggy Smalls(dead), Tupac(dead), and Kurt Cobain(dead) and they turned out OK as young adults

Watch your kids, love your kids, and guide your kids as they find their own way into this fucked up world they will inherit.
