Since when do ghosts have shifts?

Best one I ever saw was way back in the 70s. Bob 'Battleship' Kelly of the Penguins and Dave 'The Hammer' Schultz of the Flyers. Those two got into one game and the fight seemed to last forever. Eventually the linesmen got them carted off to the sin bin. Both players were still yapping at each other on their way there. All of sudden Battleship got so pissed that he threw the water bottle at Schultz while both were still in the box. Both of them reemerged from the sin bin and continued where they had left off.
Best round of fisticuffs I ever saw at an NHL game.

Heavy weights - Stan Jonathon laying a licking on Pierre Bouchard, even though Jonathan had to punch up above his head to reach Bouchard. This was in the 70's, and I've heard it's on the NHL fights tape that was around a while ago. Jonathon had to be on the toughtest players pound for pound ever.
Middle weights - this was not a famous scrap, but I saw Tocchet go at it with Maclelland (sic) in Northlands coliseum during a 5-0 loss to the oilers, regular season. Maclelland used to beat guys by switching to leftie, but when he did it to Tocchet, Tochhet switched too. They basically traded blow for blow until they got too tired and broke it up themselves, and then skated together to the box. No linesman ever touched either one, they must have gone toe to toe for close to 5 minutes. Slight edge to Tocchet, a great fight. Deadliest (and ugliest) - Ted Green getting smoked over the head by Wayne Maki's (I think) stick during a brawl in an exhibition game in Ottawa. Green going down looked like someone in a cartoon, you could almost see the birds circling above his head as he melted into the ice. For the record, Green started the stick swinging and Maki just gave it back. Ironically, Make died from brain cancer a few years ago, Ted still has the steel plate. |

Good one Gunner! i forgot about that fight, but you're right, it was a great scrap. The hammer probably lost more than he won, but he sure had a ton of them in his career and would go at anyone.

Stan Jonathon was one mean SOB, good call klicks. I remember the Ted Green incident that was nasty, I never did like stick fighting.
I also always loved how the organist at the Civic Arena would play a few bars of Anchor's Away when the Battleship stepped on the ice.

The Flyers/Senators brawl from 2004 was one of the best team fights of the newer era. Only a handful of guys left on the bench after it was all over.
There is a youtube video of it, but can't look at work. I'm sure there were better back in the older days, but i'm not a big hockey history guy. |

Loved the Flyers/Sens brawl, just chaos.
I dont' know the old timers unfortunatley, back when the fighting was much better.

Good call Jay - there were more guys in the sin bin and dressing room than in the players bench! Reminds me of a big brawl back in the 70's between the Rangers and I can't remember who (might have been Boston, but I'm not sure). Anyway, someone grabbed Eddie Giacomin's mask and tossed it into the stands during a becnh clearing brawl. He couldn't finish the game, but there was a happy ending, someone returned his mask to the team in the next day or so.

But, some of the best i've ever seen... Bob Probert - This dude has some great scraps in his day... many have him as the best of all time. Dave Brown - Yeah, he's a Flyers, thats why i know of him. He was a BADASS that hurt people. Some great fights from him. Dave "the hammer" Shultz - again, mostly only know old Flyers... he was mentioned as well, but again... another monster who had great fights. |

Stan Jonathan was only 5'6", Bouchard was about a foot taller. Jonathan also took down Larry Robinson one night.

Too many to name. Probert was probably the king, but Shane "Chainsaw" Churla is up there, Dave "The Hammer" Schultz, Tony Twist, Doug "The Thug" Smith, oh man. I have so many on video that I can't pick a favorite of all time.
