Marc Jimenez is on a distinguished road
Clemens returns…again.

Around the time when the New Jersey Nets were about to lose to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday, I flipped over to the Yankee game on Fox and saw a man standing with spiky hair and a dark suit, who just happened to be one of the most loathsome players in recent memory: Roger Clemens.

“Well,”...

Am I missing something here? In 2004 the Red Sox brought in three players and got rid of their franchise palyer because they decided the team wasn't good enough. I seem to remember that paying off a bit.

Teams always make moves because they want to improve their chances of winning. They have always given privleges /concessions to ,players in contract negotiations.

The Yanks need pitching so they went out and got some. They've got the money so they spent it.

What exactly is the problem?

I dont have a problem with the Yanks signing him to this lucrative deal, but I do have a problem with him acting like it isn't about the cash.

Yesterday on ESPN he said that he wouldn't be playing for the Yanks if Torre wasnt the manager. And that is bullshit Roger. If they offered you that 28 mil and Torre wasn't the manager, he would have been there in a hurry either way.

what's the issue? If I was retired and someone offered me obscene amounts of money to go back to work, I'd sure take it. It's fine sports for owners to treat pro sports as pure business, so how come when the players act the same everyone gets all holy? Face it - its about the money, just like any business. If you want purity, selflessness and athletes competing for the joy of competion and the sport itself, support amateur leagues and quit buying tickets to pro sports. The only real question here is whether the Yanks are wasting a big pile of dough (again), and since I'm no yankees fan, I could care less. Tip of the hat to Roger - he gets a ton of money to play part of a season and not travel unless he is playing, sounds like a good deal to me; and don't think for a second that any of his teammates would not have taken the same deal if they could get it.

Well said Klicks, the only reason I would take an issue with it is if Clemens really is trying to portray that it isn't about the money when a huge part of the reason is. Would I do it in that situation, hell yes I would, but I would not pretend to be doing it for fake reasons.

I lose respect for people that lie, bend, and mislead the truth, especially when the truth is very obvious.

I agree with what most here are saying. I have zero issue with the Yanks signing him or giving him special favors/rules. He's a baseball legend, and the best pitcher i've ever seen. Whats wrong with giving him some special treatment if he is going to come out of retirement to help your team. Forget what he is getting paid, he is still helping the Yanks... they need him more than he needs them.

And i don't believe its all about the money for him. Sure, its a big part, and he wanted the most of it that he could get. But, its also a HUGE part about his love of the game and the competition. Not to mention he's an ego maniac, and needs to better his numbers and prove he can still do it.

All IMO of course.

Really good points Jay - if it WAS just the money he wouldn't be as good as he is/was. And yeah, ego plays a huge part in elite athletes, without a healthy ego, any pro athlete would flounder because confidence is such a large factor in performance.

but having said that, it would be more classy if he'd admit that money was a good part of the reason (or at least not say anything about the money, instead of claiming it wasn't about the money at all). But, unfortunately, class and pro athletes are becoming close to mutually exclusive with a few exceptions.

Thats true as well, and was probably Beers point as well... at least admit the money was a big reason rather than just blow it off as nothing.
